They spend most of their time in the pages of a book, but today Elephant and Piggie leaped into the Eastgate Branch for a day of fun in Algonquin. Families enjoyed stories, activities, meet-and-greet photos, and plenty of laughs with the beloved duo.
If this is how the Summer Reading Challenge, Plant a Seed, READ, starts, we're in for an amazing summer at the library. Mission accomplished. Seed planted.

Join singer/songwriter/storyteller Dave Martin for Swinging the Lantern: Songs and Stories of the Sea on Wednesday, June 3 - 2-3 pm, for an exploration of the vast wonder of the world’s oceans and Great Lakes.

Pull up a sandbag and swing the lantern! The phrase, initially of British military origin, refers to the lamps hung from a ship’s beams that would swing while the ship was out at sea. This expression has come to be synonymous with the telling of tales (mostly true, some tall tales) in maritime culture.

Join us on Wednesday, June 10, at 7 p.m. at Crystal Lake Brewing for a discussion of A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold. This event is for adults ages 21 and older.

First published in 1949 and gaining widespread attention around the first Earth Day in 1970, A Sand County Almanac explores the connection between people and the natural world through science, storytelling, humor, and reflection. Leopold’s idea of a “land ethic” encourages readers to care for and respect the environment.

Join staff and readers from McHenry County Libraries United for this shared book discussion. Snacks will be provided, and beverages will be available for purchase.

Registration is required. Please visit https://aapld.libnet.info/event/15926719 to reserve your spot.
