El Niño happens when parts of the Pacific Ocean become warmer than usual. This can change weather patterns we are used to.

El Niño is not one storm, and it does not mean a big storm will definitely happen. But it can increase the chance of heavy rain, flooding, large waves and coastal erosion.

It can also bring warmer winter storms, which may mean more rain and less snow in parts of the Sierra Nevada.

This year's El Niño is getting stronger, so California is getting ready now.

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency to help the state prepare before winter storms arrive. That includes getting equipment in place, protecting roads and other infrastructure, and helping communities prepare for flooding and other risks.

You can get ready, too.

Know your risk. Sign up for local alerts. Make a plan for your home and family.

California is preparing now. Make sure you are, too.

Big news! LA County Parks has received $1,397,676 in Climate Equity Account (CEA) funding to bring four community-focused projects to life — supporting post-fire recovery, creating greener neighborhoods, expanding active transportation, and building a more climate-resilient future for LA County.

Compton Creek Phase III Trail Project — $351,359

Completing a 1.5-mile wellness loop in Willowbrook, connecting new and existing trails along Compton Creek. Part of our Urban Natureways initiative, this project reimagines flood infrastructure as a green corridor with native landscaping, shaded seating, public art, and stormwater features.

Pacoima Beautiful's Electro Bici Program — $61,481

An electric bike library bringing 20 pedal-assist e-bikes to the Northeast San Fernando Valley, plus safety education, maintenance training, and workforce development — expanding clean, affordable transportation access.

Lower LA River Mobility Hub — $284,836

A new gateway to the Lower LA River at 72nd Street, featuring improved trails, native landscaping, civic art, and a multi-purpose River Pavilion — laying the groundwork for a future Lower LA River Nature Center.

Eaton Fire Altadena Trails Restoration — $700,000

Restoring access to the Altadena Crest Trail and Eaton Canyon Natural Area Trails, closed since the 2025 Eaton Fire. This project tackles complex restoration — rebuilding trail segments, stabilizing slopes, and constructing critical infrastructure — while strengthening wildfire and climate resilience for communities across the San Gabriel Mountains.

Together, these investments reflect our commitment to post-fire recovery, equitable access, climate resilience, and connected green space for every corner of LA County.

🌿 LOVE OUR TRAILS. LEAVE NO TRACE. 🌿

Every trip outdoors is an opportunity to help care for LA County’s Trails and Natural Areas.
Whether you’re hiking, biking, horseback riding, or simply enjoying some time outside, a few simple choices can make a big difference:
🥾 Stay on designated trails — Help protect native plants, wildlife habitat, and prevent erosion.
♻️ Pack it in, pack it out — Take all trash, food scraps, and pet waste with you.
🌼 Leave what you find — Enjoy wildflowers, rocks, plants, and other natural features where they belong.
🐾 Respect wildlife — Observe from a distance and never feed or disturb wild animals.
🤝 Be considerate of others — Share the trail, follow trail etiquette, and help make the outdoors welcoming for everyone.
Our trails thrive when we all care for them. 💚
Small choices. Big impact.

From County of Los Angeles Department of Parks & Recreation.

With great sadness, we learned of the passing of Jackie, the beloved bald eagle who captured the hearts of millions.

Jackie taught us so much about the beauty and resilience of bald eagles, the importance of protecting wildlife, and the special connections we can build with the natural world. Her legacy will live on through the countless people who watched, learned, cared and were inspired to protect these magnificent birds.

We are incredibly grateful to Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV Big Bear Bald Eagle Cam) for giving millions of people the opportunity to witness Jackie’s life and learn from her through their incredible dedication and livestream.

We extend our sincere appreciation to San Bernardino County Fire (San Bernardino County Fire) for their support in spotting and monitoring Jackie.

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Ojai Raptor Center (Ojai Raptor Center) for their extraordinary efforts to care for Jackie, explore every possible avenue to help her and give her the best chance possible.

Our own San Dimas Raptor Rescue team was honored to play a part in Jackie’s journey, responding to her rescue and helping ensure she was safely transferred for specialized care.

Jackie touched lives far beyond Big Bear Valley. Her legacy will continue to inspire conservation, education and a deeper appreciation for the wildlife we are so fortunate to share our world with - and continue to inspire the conservation, rehabilitation and rescue work of County of Los Angeles Department of Parks & Recreation and San Dimas Raptor Rescue.

Rest peacefully, Jackie. 🤍🦅

Repost from eatoncanyonnaturalarea

It's been a July of every day bears. Lately, bears have been in Eaton Canyon daily, and not just one bear - there are at least 3 and possibly more regular bears in the Canyon. On 7/18/2026, a
trail camera was knocked over, and from then on the bears have appeared more on the camera than most other animals. At all hours of the day and night, they walk the trail behind where the
nature center used to stand, and they travel the more remote side canyons. One is tagged, but most are not. The quiet canyon offers food, water, shelter and a place away from people where
they can roam freely. Please enjoy these moments of over 20 bear camera captures over the last 10 days. Long live the bears of Eaton Canyon! - Kristen of Chaney Trail Corridor Project 🐻🐻🐻

Thank you to the Chaney Trail Corridor Project Chaney Trail Corridor Project, the LA County Department of Parks and Recreation County of Los Angeles Department of Parks & Recreation Trails LA County, and ECNCA for collaborating on this project to bring us these amazing and inspiring videos of the canyon's recovering wildlife.
