Our goal is for every student, staff member, and the community to come to school knowing they are safe, protected, supported, and encouraged. Sometimes that means keeping a watchful eye, and sometimes it means a smile, a high-five, or simply taking the time to connect with a student.

Good Evening, Jim Wells County!

I have one more important message for you this evening.

What started as an online challenge and hoax has now gone viral, and unfortunately, it is causing fear and concern among families and communities. I am talking about the “Cat in the Hat” online trend that is circulating on social media. This kind of behavior and threats will not be tolerated.

Parents, please take a moment to talk with your children about what they are seeing and sharing online. Some of this content is fake or AI-generated, but that does not mean threatening posts or messages should be treated as a joke. When a post names a school, student, or community or makes a threat, we take it seriously and investigate it. Apparently this trend started several days ago on social media.

Please remind your children that online pranks, threats or false reports can have very real consequences. What someone may think is “just a joke” can create fear throughout an entire community and can potentially lead to serious legal consequences.

Our schools and law enforcement partners are aware of the situation and are continuing to monitor information as it comes in. We will continue working with our local schools and keeping parents informed as investigations develop.

If your child sees something online that appears threatening or makes them feel unsafe, please don’t share it further or try to investigate it yourself. Save the information and report it to a parent, school official, or law enforcement.

Most importantly, let’s remind our children that what happens online can have very real consequences in the real world.

Yesterday, we had the honor of celebrating the loyal partners who serve with courage, heart, and an unmatched sense of duty. I am proud to recognize our incredible K9 team, for their unwavering dedication to keeping our community safe.

Each of these K9 officers plays a vital role in our daily operations, from search, detection and apprehension to supporting deputies in critical situations. Their contributions are invaluable, and we are grateful for their service.

Good Sunday afternoon, Jim Wells County!

I hope everyone had a relaxing and blessed weekend. As we prepare for another busy week, I want to take a moment to address something that affects every one of us, road and pedestrian safety.

We live in a time when people are getting around in many different ways. Some are walking, exercising, riding bicycles or using equipment that may not be permitted on public roadways. While our roads are primarily designed for vehicles, we all have a responsibility to do our part to keep everyone safe.

If you are walking at night, please wear bright or reflective clothing. With football season right around the corner, there will be many families walking and crossing roadways at night while making their way to and from their vehicles.

Consider purchasing an inexpensive reflective vest, reflective bands, or other visibility gear for yourself and your family. Carrying a flashlight when crossing the road can also help drivers see you.

If you are walking during the day, please remain alert and pay attention to traffic signs and signals. If a street sign says “DO NOT CROSS,” it means DO NOT CROSS. These signs are there for a reason—to help protect you.

As students return to school, we will have more children and pedestrians traveling near our roadways. It is important that pedestrians follow safety rules, just as drivers are expected to follow the rules of the road.

That is also why traffic cameras at intersections can be important when an accident occurs. Whether an accident was preventable or unavoidable, having accurate information about what happened can help.

At the end of the day, safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers need to pay attention. Pedestrians need to pay attention. We all have to do our part.

Let’s slow down, look out for one another, and work together to keep Jim Wells County safe.
