The City of Allegan, a Native American word meaning, "Lake of the Algonquins," was founded as a village in 1833 before becoming the county seat two years later in 1835. The village wouldn't become a city until 1908 when the growing population was approaching three thousand. Allegan prospered as a prime location of industry due to it's location on the banks of the Kalamazoo River, providing water p

ower, transportation, and location for lumber mills in the booming industry. In 1884, a devastating fire destroyed most of the business district. Stores were quickly rebuilt, however, and the furniture and woodenware companies continued to prosper. Later, in 1886, a one-lane bridge was built over the Kalamazoo River to connect limited highway M-89 to the downtown area via Second Street. Now a highlight of Allegan, the Old Iron Bridge is considered a beacon for the small town and is now adorned with vibrant LED lights that provide a beautiful and truly unique picture-taking opportunity. The City of Allegan is home to an array of parks, including the Allegan Sate Game Area, where you can find space to hike, hunt, fish, and swim. The newly developed mountain bike trail and kayak/canoe launch offers activity for avid outdoors people and those looking for casual recreation alike, while numerous other parks offer the chance to relax or play in the serene outdoor atmosphere. A summer concert series, Good Times at the Gazebo, highlights Mahan Park on the riverfront. Further along the riverfront is the Riverfront Plaza, where a larger, elevated stage is used for live music and performances for a variety of different acts. Community events like the Labor Day Bridge Walk, July 3 Jubilee, and Bridgefest have featured artists such as The Crane Wives and Jesse Ray & The Carolina Catfish. In addition to a variety of shops and dining options available throughout the Downtown area, The City of Allegan is also home to the gorgeous Griswold Auditorium; a historic banquet, conference, and event center designed as a gathering place for special events, concerts, plays, and perfect for weddings, receptions, conferences and meetings. Additionally, the single-screen Art Deco Regent Theatre offers first-run movies in state of the art digital projection and surround sound seven days a week, as well as a variety of special events and series throughout the year. No matter how you decide to spend your time, you will be a part of a unique experience and atmosphere found only in the City of Allegan.

🚨 City of Allegan Water Customers: If your lead water service line was replaced in recent years, you may see a representative from Bob Tolsma Plumbing checking the interior connection inside your home.

A couple of these connections have come apart in basements, and the licensed plumber who completed the work is proactively standing behind their work by checking all of the connections they installed. The City of Allegan Water Utilities has authorized Bob Tolsma Plumbing to perform these inspections.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work to ensure these water service line connections remain safe and secure.

All City of Allegan public meetings are open to the public. City Council meets at Allegan City Hall, located at 231 Trowbridge Street. All City Council meetings are livestreamed on YouTube and take place on the second and fourth Monday of every month at 6pm.
