Dry and seasonable weather continues, with a warm up for the second half of the week. There is still some uncertainty about rain this weekend. Models are split between prolonged ridging which would delay rain until early next week, or a breakdown of the ridge which would bring showers and thunderstorms this weekend.

Overall, May shaped up to be cooler and wetter than normal for most observation sites. Most surprisingly, Pittsburgh, Wheeling, and Morgantown had May Temperatures less than 1°F warmer than their respective April temperatures. On average, May is ~10°F warmer than April.

The current weather pattern, governed by high pressure, is expected to keep precipitation potential low through Friday.

Ensemble models for late this week suggest a potential breakdown of this high-pressure ridge, which could subsequently return chances for rain and scattered thunderstorms to the region.

On May 31, 1889, the South Fork Dam failed, releasing more than 4.8 billion gallons of water. The flood devastated Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and claimed the lives of over 2,200 people. Today, on National Dam Safety Awareness Day, we honor those lives by continuing efforts to improve dam safety across the country.

Johnstown Flood National Memorial preserves the remains of the dam and tells the story of one of the deadliest disasters in American history. The site invites visitors to reflect on the tragedy and the remarkable relief efforts that followed.
