Mayor Gentry Jones proclaimed Allen Public Library Day on October 22, 1967, when the Allen Public Library (APL) first opened its doors as an all-volunteer organization. In February 2005, the library opened in its current location at 300 North Allen Drive. The library was temporarily closed for 16-month long renovation and expansion project. It reopened its doors to the public on December 8, 2025.

Now is the perfect time to plant for a full fall harvest! 🍂

If you're thinking about planting fall produce or herbs, late summer is the best time to get started! While many people around the world usually plant produce in the spring, late summer is the best time to get started in Texas! With proper sun, water, and soil, your seeds can grow into plentiful produce and herbs just in time for the fall harvest season.

Here are some fall gardening tips:
• Keep the seeds and soil evenly moist until germination.
• Reduce frequency of watering after seedlings emerge. This will toughen the plant.
• Remember to plant according to the ideal soil temperature! Planting dates can vary by plant and year.

If you didn't know, the APL Seed Library is open on the second floor, and we are stocked with fall seeds! Grab one of these to get started:
• Bok Choy
• Broccoli
• Cabbage
• Cauliflower
• Kohlrabi
• Dill (herb)
• Chervil (herb)
• Squash

We have some great local experts to learn from, too! The Collin County Master Gardeners (CCMATX.org) and The Allen Garden Club (AllenGardenClub.org) offer tons of great information on their websites. Go check them out!

You can also meet the experts at our different gardening programs! We offer Know & Grow every month with the Collin County Master Gardeners. In September, learn about Fall Flower Gardens on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2:30 p.m. in Meeting Rooms A & B.

The Allen Garden Club will also host their Fall Plant Swap on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 6:30 p.m. in Meetings Rooms A & B.

What are you adding to your garden?
