Communities in Schools of Eastern Pennsylvania Surrounding students with a community of support to empower them to stay in school and achieve in life

Founded in 1983, Communities In Schools of Eastern PA serves more than 35,000 students across 40+ schools in 10 school districts. Part of the Communities In Schools national network, CIS of Eastern PA is an independent 501(c)(3) organization working to better educational outcomes for students in Northampton, Lehigh and Berks Counties. Providing over 35 years of academic support and resources, CIS of Eastern PA is a trusted leader that our community can count on. At CIS of Eastern PA, we see potential in every student and are committed to helping them see it, too. Students across our region face overwhelming roadblocks to their academic and personal success - learning disabilities, homelessness, bullying, emotional effects of trauma, untreated medical conditions, lack of school supplies, clothes and food. We're in schools to spot and overcome the roadblocks in our students' way, so that all kids have the same opportunity to succeed.

When a student is absent, the reason behind it is not always easy to see. A missed day could be connected to challenges outside the classroom, health concerns, transportation barriers, stress or feeling disconnected from school.

At , we look beyond the attendance number to understand the student behind it. Through trusted relationships and personalized support, Site Coordinators work with students to identify challenges and connect them with the resources they need. Improving attendance starts with understanding what’s getting in the way.

When James first became involved with , he was navigating the challenges of balancing school, work and personal responsibilities. What he needed most was someone who would listen, offer guidance and remind him that his goals were possible.

Today, James is building a career centered on serving others as a Nationally Registered EMT, volunteer firefighter and nursing student. He also continues his connection with CIS as a member of the CIS National Alumni Advisory Council, helping shape the future of the organization that supported him.

James’s story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when students have consistent encouragement and someone in their corner.

The Garden Club at Lincoln Leadership Academy Charter School is growing more than flowers, they’re growing a culture of appreciation 🌸

Four Garden Club members harvested flowers they had grown throughout the spring and summer and turned them into beautiful arrangements for school staff as a special thank-you.

Now in its third year, the Garden Club gives students meaningful opportunities to learn, work together, and give back to the community around them.

Thank you to Penn State Extension Master Gardener Kevin Kelley for helping students bring this student-led initiative to life!

The first few weeks of school bring new routines, new expectations and new experiences. But as the year gets underway, some students may begin facing academic, social or personal challenges that impact their ability to fully engage.

Site Coordinators remain a consistent presence throughout the school year, building relationships, checking in with students and connecting them with the resources and support they need.

Showing up for students means being there beyond the first day, first week and first month of school.

Have you ever thought to yourself... what does a Site Coordinator actually do?

Well if so, a lot of the work actually happens in the moments you don’t always see. It’s checking in with a student who needs encouragement. It’s listening when a challenge feels overwhelming. It’s helping connect students and families with the right support at the right time.

Our Site Coordinators are a consistent presence in schools, building relationships that help students feel supported, confident and connected.
