🔥 WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE A LITHIUM-ION BATTERY FIRE

As temperature rises, the battery’s electrolyte begins to break down.

• This breakdown can release flammable gases
• The electrolyte can vaporize, causing pressure to build inside the cell

➡️ This creates a very dangerous condition inside the battery.

💥 HEAT + PRESSURE = VENTING OR CELL FAILURE

• Many battery cells are built with pressure relief vents
• These vents are designed to release internal pressure and reduce the chance of a more violent rupture

BUT—

➡️ When venting happens, hot flammable gases can be released
➡️ If those gases ignite, they can produce:

🔥 Jet-like flames
🔥 Sparks and flying debris
🔥 Rapid fire spread from cell to cell

⚠️ In lithium-ion battery incidents, the danger is not just the visible flame—
it’s also the gas release, pressure buildup, and chain reaction inside the pack.

🔥 HOW DO YOU REALLY PUT OUT FIRE?

Fire doesn’t just “burn out.”
It survives because of four key elements:

🔥 Heat
🔥 Fuel
🔥 Oxygen
🔥 Chemical reaction

Remove just ONE—and the fire dies.

🚒 Firefighters don’t fight flames randomly.
We control the environment:

💧 Cool the heat
🛑 Cut the oxygen
⛽ Remove the fuel
⚗️ Break the chemical reaction

💡 That’s why the right method matters.
Wrong approach = fire grows.

CO poisoning kills more people during power outages than freezing. Generators, grills, and camping stoves produce deadly carbon monoxide gas that has no smell or color.

NEVER USE INDOORS:
✗ Generators
✗ Gas/charcoal grills
✗ Camping stoves
✗ Gas ovens for heat
✗ Cars running in garage

SAFE GENERATOR PLACEMENT:
- 20+ feet from doors, windows, vents
- Point exhaust away from home
- Never in garage (even with door open)

SYMPTOMS TO RECOGNIZE:
- Headache, dizziness, weakness
- Nausea, vomiting, confusion
- Chest pain, blurred vision
- Everyone in household affected at once

IF YOU SUSPECT CO POISONING:
Get outside immediately. Call 911. Do not re-enter until cleared by emergency services.

Install battery-operated CO detectors on every floor. Check batteries now.

❄️ WINTER STORM SAFETY MESSAGE ❄️

A major winter storm is impacting large parts of the U.S. The National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) urges everyone to take steps now to stay safe.

🔥 Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn
⚠️ Never use ovens, grills, or generators to heat your home
🚨 Make sure smoke alarms and CO alarms are working
🕯️ Avoid candles—use flashlights when possible
🔌 Prepare for power outages with flashlights, batteries, and warm clothing
🚗 Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary

Cold weather increases the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Preparation and safe choices save lives.
