Tomorrow Alliance Begins Next Step in the Search for Next Fire Chief

Tomorrow marks an important milestone for the City of Alliance as the community begins the formal interview process to identify its next Fire Chief. The process begins with a Fire Review Board comprised of individuals who have volunteered their time and expertise to help evaluate seven candidates for the position. Members of the Fire Review Board include Police Chief Leavitt, Dr. Brian Shelmadine, Roger Applegarth, representing the Alliance Rural Fire Protection District and selected by the ARFD Board of Directors, and Trent Kleinow, Assistant Fire Chief for the City of North Platte. Following the review board interviews, candidates will meet with the Civil Service Commission, whose members play a critical role in maintaining a merit-based hiring process as required by Nebraska law. The Commission is responsible for evaluating candidate qualifications and establishing an eligibility list from which the City Manager may make an appointment. The process is designed to ensure that every candidate receives a thorough and impartial assessment. The current Civil Service Commissioners are Susan Cummings, Rocky Bell, and Trish Johnston.

After the Civil Service Commission establishes an eligibility list, the City Manager will select finalists to participate in the Department Head Hiring Process. This final phase is intended to further evaluate leadership philosophy, organizational fit, and the ability to advance the City's strategic priorities. The next Fire Chief will be entrusted with leading a department that not only responds to emergencies, but also serves as a cornerstone of public safety, community trust, and regional collaboration. Leadership, operational excellence, employee development, fiscal responsibility, and community engagement will all be important considerations throughout the selection process. The City of Alliance is grateful to the commissioners and community representatives who are dedicating their time to this important effort. Their involvement helps ensure that Alliance selects the best person to lead the department into the future.

The strength of our community has always been found in the people willing to step forward and serve in all capacities. We are grateful to every candidate participating in this process and to the volunteers and officials helping guide it. Tomorrow begins more than a hiring process; it is an investment in the future of public safety in Alliance. Adventure Book Club for grades 3-5 meets on Tuesday, September 15, sharing discussion of Nancy Drew mysteries by Carolyn Keene and Hardy Boys mysteries by Franklin W. Dixon. Youth Book Club for grades 6-8 meets on Thursday, September 24, sharing discussion of historical fiction books. Both youth book clubs meet in the Children’s Room, inside the Library, from 4:30-5:30 pm, plus youngsters are invited to bring their own cool book creations to share!

Digital Detox Friday is September 25 from 10-11 am with Family Builders, downstairs in the Sandhills Room. Preschool and over can participate, with families welcome. All building supplies remain at the Library for future use.

The Alliance Public Library is facilitating a community book discussion of Old Jules, the highly acclaimed novel by Mari Sandoz and invites members of the public to attend this special one-time Library Book Club event Wednesday, September 16 from 1-2 p.m.

The book talk will cover the life and times of Jules Sandoz, the father of Mari Sandoz. A Swiss immigrant who settled the upper Niobrara region of Nebraska in the late nineteenth century, Jules Sandoz had a lasting impact on his daughter, Mari, and her writing.

Completed in 1933 and published in 1935, Old Jules is considered Mari Sandoz’s masterpiece.

The story of a pioneer in the high plains of Western Nebraska, the novel brought notoriety to the author and the Sandhills.

This literary discussion is affiliated with the Mari Sandoz program, ‘Life and Drive of Mari Sandoz’ the Nebraska Humanities program at the Library on Friday, September 18 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Alliance Public Library is excited for a new school year! Story Time Adventures for ages 3-6 will feature National Parks on September 1 and 3, Grateful for Grandparents on September 8 and 10, School Days on September 15 and 17, Celebrate America! on September 22 and 24, then Autumn Adventures on September 29 and October 1. Story Time is shared on Tuesday mornings at 10 am and Thursday afternoons at 1 pm in the Children’s Room with several stories, birthdays, music and craft.

Mommy and Me for ages 2-5 with parent is Wednesday, September 9 in the Children’s Room with stories, birthdays, music, movement and craft.

LEGO Club for grades K-2 will be Tuesdays, September 8 and 22 from 4-5 pm in the APL Community Room. LEGO Club for grades 3-5 is Monday, September 14 from 4-5 pm in the APL Community Room. All LEGO supplies remain at the Library for future use.

The Alliance Public Library book club will be discussing The Art of Racing in the Rain Tuesday, August 25 at 1 p.m. in the Library community room.

This highly acclaimed novel by Garth Stein that remained on the New York Times best seller list for three years and adapted into a major motion picture starring Kevin Cosner has sold 7 million copies world-wide and been translated into 38 different languages.

This New York Times bestseller is a heart-wrenching but also a humorous and ultimately uplifting story about family, love, loyalty and hope and a captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life as only a dog could tell it.

You will not want to miss this discussion on the meaning of life told from a beloved companion’s point of view. Dog lovers and readers alike will relish this heartwarming tale that begs to be read.

Our August Employee Spotlight is Cynthia Horn. Cynthia Horn is our Children and Youth Services Librarian and recently shared some details about herself and her time with the City.
How long have you worked for the City?
At Alliance Public Library, I’ve been with the City for over 8 years, starting in Adult Services, then moving to Children’s and Youth Services Librarian for the past 6 years.
If you could switch places with anyone on earth for one day (past or present), who would you choose? My mom, living a day in her growing-up years, experiencing life on their Minnesota farm. It would be remarkable to know what her life was like before she brought us into the world.
If you could live anywhere in the world for one year, all expenses paid, where would it be and why? Denmark, since this is my grandpa Chris’s homeland, coming to the US when he was 16. Germany would also be great to visit; then I could explore many cool places from both sides of my family.
What is your favorite part about working for the City? Our Library family is amazing, and we love serving our community! It’s exciting to grow together and to have individuals and families share their talents with us. It’s always like Christmas at the Library, unwrapping terrific treasures every day! My other favorite time of year is Dr. Seuss’ birthday, celebrating with the Cat in the Hat.
What is your idea of a perfect Summer Saturday? Spending time with family, especially our daughters and their families. Our sweet grandchildren continue to inspire us with their abounding joy and energy! Sharing great food, conversation, and festivities together for a perfect day.
What hobby have you been wanting to try, but haven’t yet? What’s keeping you from trying it? My ultimate hobby would be to travel the world, but traveling over the ocean would be the ultimate hurdle. Therefore, I just enjoy books and pictures from around the world.
What is your favorite quote? “Peace begins with a smile.” - Mother Teresa. My favorite to share is, “Share your sparkle!” - Dodinsky.
