Wabaunsee County is seeking a dedicated and experienced Emergency Management Coordinator to lead the County’s emergency preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery efforts.

The Emergency Management Director is a full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Board of County Commissioners. This position is responsible for coordinating emergency services and disaster operations throughout Wabaunsee County and working closely with local, regional, state, and federal partners.

Qualifications: A high school diploma or GED is required, with a bachelor’s degree preferred. Five years of progressively responsible experience in emergency management, public safety, military service, or a related field is preferred. A valid Kansas driver’s license is required. The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain Kansas Certified Emergency Manager (KCEM) certification and complete required FEMA and NIMS training. Strong communication, organizational, planning, and leadership skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively with elected officials, emergency responders, governmental agencies, volunteers, and the public.

The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to work effectively in both routine and emergency situations. This position requires the ability to respond to emergencies and work extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Our 3rd Cohort of Rural Champions is in full swing, and we couldn’t be more excited to introduce you to each of these incredible community leaders.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be highlighting our Rural Champions, sharing their stories, and celebrating the meaningful work they’re doing to make a difference in their communities. From inspiring ideas to impactful initiatives, these champions are helping create positive change in rural Kansas. 💚

Stephanie Imthurn - Wabaunsee County Office of Economic Development

Wabaunsee County’s Reimagine Rural: Land, Place, and Productivity initiative addresses critical challenges affecting economic growth, land stewardship, and community vitality. Identified through county planning, data analysis, and community input, the project focuses on reducing blight, revitalizing properties, improving land productivity, and protecting the Flint Hills landscape. While the county has established priorities, partnerships, and tools such as a Land Bank and revitalization programs, limited staff capacity and resources prevent implementation at the necessary scale. A dedicated effort by a Rural Champion would strengthen coordination with landowners and partners, expand technical assistance, leverage investment, and advance visible improvements that support agriculture, economic development, community pride, and long-term rural sustainability.
Stephanie Imthurn was chosen for extensive experience in strategic planning, facilities management, and rural community development, combined with deep local roots and trusted community relationships. Their focus on blight reduction, land stewardship, and coordinated community initiatives reflects a practical, collaborative approach to addressing rural challenges. Their experience building partnerships and aligning resources positions them to lead sustainable community improvements.

Update - Construction Delayed to Sept 28th.
The South Steps to the Wabaunsee County Courthouse are scheduled to be replaced starting on Monday, September 28th and could last through Friday, October 2nd. Please use the North or East entrances next week if possible.
The Ramp Entrance on the South side of the Courthouse will be open for handicap access.
