Tree Removal

There have been several questions regarding tree removal in the southern part of Alma. The removal is related to preparation for an upcoming sidewalk improvement project that is planned along the frontage of several properties in the area.

As part of this project, it has been determined that one or more trees located within the public right-of-way must be removed in order to allow for proper sidewalk installation and to ensure compliance with accessibility and safety standards.

These sidewalk improvements are part of the City’s ongoing efforts to enhance pedestrian safety, improve accessibility, and provide long-term infrastructure benefits to the community. After reviewing the site conditions, the removal of the identified tree(s) is necessary to accommodate the required sidewalk width, as well as proper grading and drainage.

The tree removal will be performed by the City’s contractor prior to the start of sidewalk construction. All work will occur within the public right-of-way, and every effort will be made to minimize disruption to adjacent properties during the process.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss the project in more detail, please feel free to contact me, John Jackson, at 479-670-3850 or [email protected]

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to improve our community’s infrastructure.

Colored Water Issues
Last night, the ozone system at the water treatment plant had issues with freezing. The water treatment plant has been operating without the benefit of ozone since this morning. Unfortunately that leads to increased manganese levels in the distribution system. If you are experiencing colored water, it is a direct result of oxidized manganese in the distribution system. Although this colored water is unappealing, it is safe to consume and to shower and bath. Avoid washing white clothes if your water has color. It could possibly discolor white clothing. If you experience discoloration of your white clothing, you can use a product called Iron Out to remove the discoloration. It is available at Walmart or you can pick up a package at the Alma water office on Wednesday. The water treatment plant operators are working diligently to restore the ozone system. Thank for your patience and understanding.

ALMA WATER TREATMENT PLANT – MANGANESE REMOVAL FACILITY
Construction of upgrades and improvements to the Alma Water Treatment Plant – Manganese Removal Facility were financed by the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. The DWSRF program is administered by Arkansas Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Division with joint funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and State of Arkansas and has been assigned project number 23-179. Manganese has been identified as a secondary maximum contaminant by the EPA and does not require public water systems to test for manganese. This project will install two new pressure filters rated for a total capacity of 3.6 million gallons per day and associated pumping, piping and controls to reduce the amount of manganese in the drinking water system. The project will provide water quality benefits reducing aesthetics (black to brown color, black staining on tubs/showers, toilets, plumbing fixtures, and laundry) and taste for community residents and businesses in and near the City of Alma. DWSRF programs operate around the country to provide states and communities the resources necessary to maintain and improve the infrastructure that protects our valuable water resources nationwide. The project is a loan forgiveness project and will not affect the rates that customers pay for water.

Alma water will be conducting fire hydrant maintenance on Thursday and Friday. You may temporarily experience brown water as the water velocity in the line strips manganese from walls of the line. Although very unappealling, the manganese is a harmless mineral. Avoid washing white clothes while water is colored. The colored water should clear up quickly if you run your faucet for a few minutes.
