A drowning impacts far more than the victim’s family. When a water emergency becomes a recovery operation, it can involve the U.S. Coast Guard, local law enforcement, fire departments, dive teams, boats, aircraft, and countless hours of personnel time.
While no dollar amount can ever measure the value of a life, it’s a reminder that investing in water safety, swim lessons, life jackets, and prevention is always worth it.
As far as we can determine, there are no staffed lifeguard beaches along Michigan’s Lake Huron shoreline in our region. When visiting area beaches:
🏖️ Observe all warning flags and posted advisories.
🌊 Check weather and water conditions before entering the water.
🦺 Have children wear properly fitted life jackets near open water.
👶 Keep children age 6 and under within arm’s reach at all times.
â• Locate ring buoys and emergency equipment when you arrive.
🏊 Never swim alone, and avoid entering the water if conditions are beyond your abilities.
Water can change quickly on the Great Lakes. A few simple precautions can make all the difference.
Stay safe and enjoy Michigan’s beautiful shoreline this summer.
