About Us

Rockport State Recreation Area was transferred from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Forest and Resource Division to the Parks and Recreation Division in December of 2011 and officially dedicated on June 29, 2012. It includes the Besser Natural Area and land on Middle Island, encompassing 4,237 acres of property located in Alpena and Presque Isle counties bordering on Lake Hu

ron. Things to do at Rockport:
* Rockport is an excellent location for viewing the night sky.
* Trails – Hiking, Biking, Equestrian
* Sinkholes – A dozen sinkholes on the property
* Fossils – Devonian Period
* Beaches – Secluded, sandy
* Historic Ghost Village – Bell at Besser Natural Area
* Abandoned Limestone Quarry
* Bat Hibernaculum
* Dark Sky Preserve stargazing
* Shipwreck – the Portland, located off the coast of Besser Natural Area beach, marked by a buoy
* Fishing – Deepwater port & Historic Pier
* Middle Island
* Paddle – sea kayak or stand up paddleboard on the big lake
* Picnic area
* Boat launch

The Michigan Army National Guard’s 107th Engineer Battalion will conduct engineer construction projects next month at Rockport Recreation Area north of Alpena and P.H. Hoeft State Park in Presque Isle County.
