Our 8th graders celebrated their transition to high school this evening, and our alumni keynote speaker had some profound thoughts to share with them.
“There are schools that prepare you for a career. And then there are schools that prepare you for life. Amana is the second kind….While most schools teach you about the world, Amana taught you to respond to it….Year after year, Amana didn’t just teach you about the world’s problems. It trained you to be part of the solution. That training is not something every child has the opportunity to receive. Know how rare and powerful that is.
Being given the space to learn about the world, to ask hard questions, to use your hands and your hearts simultaneously — that is a privilege….
Hold onto that privilege. Not with guilt. But with gratitude. And with responsibility. Knowing that you have been entrusted with those privileges at your fingertips. The very definition of Amana is trust, so embody that definition into your work. You are entrusted with making sure that what once was poured into you — gets poured back out…
Whatever path you choose to walk, make sure you bring it back to your community, to the people who need it most, and to the world that shaped you.
Because progress without purpose is just motion. But progress in service of humanity? That is legacy.”
