But any Maori parent knows that you have to watch a child patiently, quietly, without interference, to learn whether he has the nature of the warrior or the priest. Our children come to us as seeking beings, Maori teachers tell us, with two rivers running through them — the celestial and the physical, the knowing and the not-yet-knowing. Their struggle is to integrate the two. Our role as adults is to support this process, not to shape it. It is not ours to control.

The following statement somehow showed up on my Twitter feed the other day: “Spontaneous reading happens for a few kids. The vast majority need (and all can benefit from) explicit instruction in...

In Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident and Capable Children, Angela J. Hanscom writes "kids of all ages should get at least three hours of free play outdoors a day." I'm all for balance. Understandably, family life is a tricky juggle. But no matter the situation we are in we owe it to our children to try our best to give them baseline the components they need for higher-level development. Maybe 4-6 hours a day outside isn't doable but the current statistics say that the average child only gets 4-7 minutes of outdoor free play every day. This means that the average child is probably outside for 30 minutes or so a few times a week.

If children can consume media through screens 1200 hours a year on average than the time is there and at least some of it can and should be shifted towards a more productive and healthy outcome.

Join the talk today!
Being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, reduces anger, fear, and stress and increases pleasant feelings. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones.
Research done in hospitals, offices, and schools has found that even a simple plant in a room can have a significant impact on stress and anxiety.

These are natural forests spreading throughout Mizukisawa the area at the headwaters of the Kiso river having a combined area of 82 hectares.
There are different kinds of trees both coniferous and broad-leaved including more than 200 year-old Kiso Cypresses'. In particular, you will be impressed by a gigantic Sawara Cypress, which is more than 550 years old and 2.5 meters in diameter. A wood chip covered path extends about 3 kilometers through these natural forests so that everybody can enjoy casual trekking. Tokonami Waterfall, made accessible in June of 2008, with a drop of about 20 meters in a staircase pattern, is also a sight to see.

Olney has always had a strong farm identity, but the school’s goal is not necessarily to graduate future farmers. Graduates go on to four-year colleges, and few if any work in agriculture later. “Our goal is well-rounded citizens who are smart consumers with social awareness. The farm is a great place to absorb lessons in the complexity of sustainable systems,” Guindon points out.

The nation’s first USDA-certified organic campus integrates farm work and food production into every aspect of student life.
