Trans-Pecos Wildlife Management Areas - Texas Parks and Wildlife

Trans-Pecos Wildlife Management Areas - Texas Parks and Wildlife Trans-Pecos wildlife management areas are dedicated to wildlife management, research, demonstration, and appropriate public use.

Our goals include developing, managing, and restoring wildlife habitats and populations of indigenous wildlife species, providing a site where research of wildlife populations and habitats can be conducted under controlled situations, and providing for public hunting and appreciative use of wildlife in a manner compatible with the resource. We also provide areas to demonstrate habitat development

and wildlife management practices to landowners and other interested groups, as well as a natural environment and facilities for use by educational groups, naturalists, and other professional investigators. If interested in visiting a Trans-Pecos WMA, please keep in mind that a permit (limited use or annual public hunting) and registration is required at the self-registration stations.

πŸŽ‰ Thank You, Alpine! πŸŽ‰

The Brewster County Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation had an amazing turnout at its 2nd Annual Banquet! Folks from all over came out to support conservation, and the energy in the room was incredible.
🌟 Huge thanks to all the volunteers, the SRSU Range and Wildlife Club, and the community partners who made the night possible. Your support keeps Texas mule deer and their habitat thriving.
🎟️ Special shout-out to our Non-Typical Raffle grand prize winner, Raul Baeza! And of course, the biggest winner of the night: Texas mule deer. 🦌
We couldn’t do it without your support β€” see you next year!

There are more free-roaming aoudad west of the Pecos River in Texas alone than there are bighorn and desert bighorn sheep in Canada, Mexico, and the United States – over 100,000. Texas was home to more than 1,800 desert bighorn sheep just a decade ago. Now, there are only 400.

Desert bighorns in Texas are in jeopardy of being extirpated for a second time. The cause? Competition for forage and water, as well as disease from the invasive aoudad populations that were first introduced as a hunting species by TPWD in 1957 in the Palo Duro Canyon.

In this episode, Sheep Fever co-host and WSF President & CEO Gray N. Thornton discusses this issue and WSF’s new policy on aoudad with Texan WSF Director and Texas Bighorn Society immediate past president Sam Cunningham, TBS president and former WSF staffer Clay Brewer, and WSF COO and Executive Vice President of Conservation Corey Mason.

This is a great chance to learn about the Texas aoudad issue from some of the very best in the business.

Remembering our Bighorn Heroes

Five years ago, we lost 3 dedicated wildlife proffesionals in a tragic helicopter accident while they were doing what they loved - protecting nature. Their passion, courage, and commitment to conservation continues to inspire us every day.

Better late than never, I apologize for the delay in congratulating our drawn hunter on this awesome ram!
