Public notice: there may be a lingering ammonia smell at the south end of town near the highway, but it should dissipate quickly and we do not believe there is any need for concern at this time. Light northerly breezes are carrying it away from the city.

This evening, there was a minor release of anhydrous ammonia at the co-op, but thanks to a quick response from the co-op’s emergency contact after AV FD personnel made them aware of the situation, the leaking valve was closed and no more gas release occurred.

On December 28, 2025, at approximately 2249 hrs. Alta Vista City FD and Alta Vista Rural FD was paged to the 300 blk of Washington Street for a structure fire.

Alta Vista City Fire responded with 7 personnel, 2 Engines and a Rescue. Asst Chief #231 was on Engine 262 the first due engine and declared a working fire and assumed command. Crews pulled an 1 3/4” attack line and the fire was knocked down quickly.

Chief #230 arrived on scene and assumed command so crews could go interior to look for fire extension. Crews began to ventilate the inside of the structure which was deemed to have someone living in it. All occupants were deemed out after a quick search if the structure. The structure upon investigation was found to not be within code and the fire was ruled electrical in nature. Crews operated on scene for approximately an hour and a half before returning to quarters.

A reminder to please come join us this Saturday from 3:30 pm to 7:00 pm for our open house. Come eat some great food and watch your city firefighters do an extrication demo. The meal will be on free will donation. All proceeds will go to get much needed equipment.

This morning at 0001 hours City first responders were paged for a medical emergency in town. Upon arrival of first responders it was recognized that the patient was having a serious medical issue. First responders triaged code red and upon the arrival of Morris County EMS the medical condition was confirmed and City firefighters were paged again to set up a landing zone as the patient was being flown via medivac to a Topeka area hospital.

Crews worked hand in hand wi EMS and Life Star to provide excellent patient care. All crews cleared and returned to quarters at approximately 0130.

Alta Vista City Fire Department is a 12 member department located in southwest Wabaunsee County. We run approximately 35-50 calls a year, with 3 trucks, covering everything from fires, automobile accidents and medical calls.

We are currently looking for volunteers to fill several positions. No experience necessary, just the heart and drive to serve your community, family and friends.

If you are interested please contact city hall for an application, any member of the fire department, or show up to the fire meeting the last Thursday of every month.

This morning at approximately 0800 hrs. Alta Vista Rural and Alta Vista City fire departments were paged to the 5300 block of Pepperhill Road for the report of a structure fire.

At 0805 hours Alta Vista City Engine 260 responded with 3 personnel. At 0815 Engine 260 arrived on scene and declared a working fire and established Pepper Hill Command under Asst Chief C. Walker. Crews pulled 2- 1.5” attack lines and began putting water on the fire within 5 minutes of arrival. Alta Vista Rescue 261 responded with 2 personnel.

Mutual aid was initially requested from Geary County Rural Fire Dept, Riley County Fire District #1, Dwight Rural Fire Department, and White City Fire. Riley county, Dwight and White City were all disregarded.
By 0900 hours command declared the fire under control with extensive overhaul required. Geary county and Alta Vista City worked for another hour and a half overhauling the fire.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire has been ruled accidental electrical. Pepper Hill road command was terminated at 1025 hours with both Alta Vista City units clearing the scene.

A big thanks goes out to all the mutual aid departments and to Wabaunsee County dispatch, Geary County dispatch and Morris County dispatch. And to Geary County Emergency Management for their assistance on scene. Also Geary County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.

Thank you to all our city volunteers that showed up and took time out of their morning to respond and protect.
