Sharing an update on recent law enforcement activity here in town.
Why We Exist
On August 27th, your Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, working alongside Special Agents with the Kansas Department of Corrections, conducted a search warrant at a residence in Alta Vista involving 33YOA W/M Gabriel Nurl Burch.
To understand why this arrest matters, you need to understand the history behind it.
In 2017, Burch was the perpetrator in a horrific domestic violence case in Riley County. Burch was convicted of aggravated battery and kidnapping. Years later, the consequences of that violence had not disappeared. Burch was paroled in November 2025, days later he violated conditions of parole and was swiftly returned to prison.
Burch was released again in March of this year, KDOC designated Burch as a "high-risk violent offender" and prohibited him from entering Riley County. KDOC placed him on GPS monitoring.
Our investigation began after information was received concerning suspected narcotics activity at Burch's residence at 816 Park Street.
WBSO deputies and KDOC Special Agents subsequently conducted a lawful parole related reasonable suspicion search. During a tactical sweep for other occupants, suspected drug paraphernalia containing white powder residue was observed in plain view.
A search warrant was applied for and granted before our evidentiary search.
During ex*****on of that warrant, our team recovered suspected fentanyl and synthetic stimulants, commonly known as “bath salts,” multiple smoking devices and other drug paraphernalia, along with evidence associated with the weighing, packaging and distribution of narcotics.
We also recovered multiple fi****ms, including a sawed-off shotgun.
We discovered a motorcycle believed to have been stolen approximately ten years ago in Sedgwick County KS.
But this post really isn't about drugs, guns or stolen property.
It's about why we exist.
After this arrest I recieved a message.
Despite her pain & everything she survived, she asked us to...pray for him.
She asked people to pray for his soul and that somehow he finds his way back from the darkness while remaining somewhere he cannot hurt anyone else. She asked us to pray for his family, for the people whose lives have already been changed by his actions, for our community and for the law enforcement officers who made this arrest possible.
Then his survivor said something I believe every cop should remember:
“When someone puts themselves so far outside the boundaries of what is safe and healthy for society, the only way to stop the cycle of destruction is to put a boundary between them and the people they can hurt.”
That's it.
That's the job.
Sometimes service means helping somebody on the worst day of their life. Sometimes it means giving somebody another chance.
And sometimes it means "becoming the boundary."
I am incredibly proud of Sergeant Sumner, our Deputies and Detectives, Undersheriff Herbel, and our partners with KDOC who worked relentlessly worked on this investigation.
Most of all, I am grateful to a survivor who, after everything she endured, still found enough grace in her heart to ask us to pray for the very man, who almost took her life.
Please join me in doing exactly what she asked & pray for victims & survivors. Pray for the families. Pray for our community & pray for those who protect it.
And yes, pray for Gabriel Burch too.
Gabriel Burch is confined to the Wabaunsee County Jail without bond on charges of:
21-5706(a)(c)(1)— Possession of op**te, o***m, narcotic or certain stimulants
21-5709(b)(2)(e3)— Use/possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia
21-6204(b)— Maintaining a public nuisance
21-5705(a)(1)(d)(3)(B)(6) — Distribution or possession with intent to distribute heroin/fentanyl within 1,000 feet of a school, 1 to less than 3.5 grams
79-5204 — No drug tax stamp
21-6301(a)(5)(b)(2)— Criminal use of weapons; shotgun barrel less than 18 inches or automatic trigger
21-6301(a)(8)(b)(1)— Criminal use of weapons; firearm possessed by a person addicted to and using a controlled substance
21-6304(a)(2)(C)(b)— Criminal possession of a weapon by a felon
21-5801(a)(4)(b)(4)— Possession of stolen property, value less than $1,500
Burch is presumed innocent of these new charges unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
A woman has asked we all pray for the man who almost took her life, I reckon that's about as good & beautiful as anything ever gets in life & we shall oblige the Lady, so say we all ❤️
