***REMINDER!***

Lock your vehicle

There has been an increase of entries to vehicles in the city, as well as in the surrounding communities in Effingham County. The wide majority of these entries and thefts were through unlocked car doors. Please remember to always keep your car locked, valuables (including keys) out of plain sight and park in a well lit area if possible.

The Altamont Police will do everything we can to stop these crimes, but we need your assistance. By locking your doors you minimize the chances of becoming a victim of theft. We ask that if you see any suspicious person, vehicles or activity, report it to the Altamont Police Department 1-618-483-6219 or Effingham County Sheriff’s Office at 1-217-342-8475

***Update: Been found

The Altamont Police Department is asking for the public’s help finding the suspect who stole a local family’s bike.

On January 7th, 2023, at approximately 2:26 a.m., Officers responded to the first block of Fourth and Division St. for a suspicious subject. The police were able to obtain surveillance footage of the suspect outside a residence garage in the backyard at 2:02 a.m. Police were unable to locate anyone at this time.

Later in the morning we received a call of a stolen bike downtown on Washington St. outside the Cookie Jar. The stolen bike is a black Electra 29 inch 1 speed. The bike has a silver front fender and is missing the back fender, and no front handbrakes. The Electra bike is valued at $1,000.

There was also a black mongoose bike that was found behind the Cookie Jar leaning against a shed. We believe the suspect switched out bikes. The mongoose bike was identified and given back to the owners.

Please call the Altamont Police Department with any information at 1-618-483-6219.

Below is the stolen bike.
