Last chance to help name our hiker!

This fall, the Village of Altamont will have a new landmark: A bronze statue to mark the end of the Long Path hiking trail between New York City and, of all places, Altamont. The statue, whose installation was masterminded by our friends at Historic Altamont, portrays a tired but proud hiker contemplating all that she has seen along her long hike, or so it seems to me. It’s truly lovely.

But this hiker needs a name, and we’re counting on the community to come up with one! For the next several weeks, a clay model of the statue will be on view here at the Library alongside a suggestion box where you can tell us what you think her name ought to be and why. The ballot box will be open until the close of business this Saturday!

A winner will be chosen and announced this June and the person who suggests the winning name will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Altamont business of their choice. Please stop by, take a long look and give us your best idea!

Do you own or manage a business in or around the Village of Altamont? If so, please join us for the next meeting of the Altamont Roundtable on Friday, May 15th from 8am to 9am!

What is the Altamont Roundtable?
The Altamont Roundtable is a collaborative project between Altamont Free Library and the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce. This will be the first of what we hope will be quarterly meetings of business owners and managers, community organization leaders and policy makers in and around the Village of Altamont to discuss how we can support one another and work together to plan major community events.

Why are we meeting?
Altamont is a unique and special community that presents both challenges and opportunities to businesses and community groups. Our hope is to talk about how we can support one another through those challenges and collectively take full advantage of those opportunities in order to see if we can come up with ways to improve the Village for everyone who lives, works, visits and shops here.

If you are able to join us, we'd be grateful for an RSVP by noon on Thursday, May 14th at [email protected] or by phone at (518) 861-7239. Coffee and light breakfast-y things will be served.

Update & Clarification: This evening's presentation will be held at 7pm, not 6pm as our earlier post stated. Our apologies for the mistake.

One last reminder: This Thursday, there are authors among us!

Altamont Free Library is pleased to invite you to a very special presentation entitled “Love is a Living System” by author and relationship coach Joëlle Lydon on Thursday, May 7th at 7pm. Joëlle will discuss her new book Unbreakable Us: Removing the Barriers to Love.

Many of us have lived long enough to know that love is more complex than we were first led to believe.

We’ve built careers, raised families, navigated long marriages, second chapters, loss, and renewal. And yet relationships — even meaningful ones — can still surprise us.

In this reflective and engaging author talk, Joëlle Lydon shares the central ideas from her book Unbreakable Us: Removing the Barriers to Love. Rather than offering advice or quick fixes, she invites attendees into a new way of seeing love — not as a feeling we fall into, but as a living system we participate in over time.

Through story, metaphor, and lived experience, Joëlle explores why capable, thoughtful people still find intimacy challenging — and what shifts when we begin to understand the deeper patterns shaping connection.

Please join us for this thoughtful conversation about love, growth, and the architecture of lasting relationships.
