Earlier this year, Altamont Free Library held our annual I Love My Library Gala. This year, we chose the theme “Reading 9 to 5” in honor of Dolly Parton, whose commitment to childhood literacy, not to mention amazing music, have made her a hero to many of us in the library community.

Dolly passed away earlier today and we join her fans, family and loved ones in mourning her passing. There will never be another Dolly Parton and her legacy will live on and on.

We’re very grateful to graphic designer Heather Moulder () for her incredible Dolly-inspired gala logo, as well as to Joleen Rockhill for her amazing Dolly sketch that we used to promote the Gala.

Bring in your BINGO Cards!

We've had a blast with the Summer Reading Program, but now it's time to turn in your Summer Reading BINGO cards! Bring them by the end of the day on Monday, August 24 in order to get your last week worth of raffle tickets for some fabulous prizes.

Whether or not you win a prize, we’re so, so proud of all our participants for all the new fruits they’ve tried, all the art they've made, all the jokes they’ve learned, and all the elephant facts they've learned. We’re especially proud of all of the hundreds and hundreds of hours of reading our participants have done this summer!

Raffle winners will be pulled on Tuesday, August 25th and winners will be notified early next week.

It's almost time again for a visit from Hudson!

If you happened to stop by the library a few Saturdays ago, you might have met a very cool, very charismatic Golden Retriever named Hudson! Hudson is a certified therapy dog, and he and his human friend Emily Gustin will be visiting the library regularly over the next few months! Please join us for Hudson’s next visit this Saturday, August 22nd from 11am to noon!

Combining literacy and social-emotional learning, this program provides children for all ages with opportunities to read to and interact with a certified therapy dog. The sessions promote reading motivation, emotional regulation, active listening, and respectful peer interactions in a fun and engaging setting. You won’t want to miss it!

There are still a few spots available! Have you registered yet?

This summer as we’ve observed and celebrated the nation’s 250th birthday, we’ve been engaging with analog skills. We’ve been writing with quills and making toys out of things we can find in nature and things like that. It’s been a blast! As we wind down the summer reading program, we invite children ages 5 to 11 to join us for for one last project this summer.

On Tuesday, August 18th from 10am to 11am, join us in the community room at Altamont Village Hall to learn about traditional fiber arts and make your own needlepoint sampler!

This project will be led by members of the amazing Train Station Quilters quilting group, who have decades worth of crafting wisdom to share.

This Saturday, August 15th from 10am to 11am, please join children’s author Carolyn DeLuise for a new series of drop-in programs we’re calling The Card Connection!

Carolyn is a greeting card enthusiast and will supply cards for all occasions, the library will provide stamps, writing tools, stickers and other decorative materials and you’ll provide a thoughtful message for someone who would dearly like to hear from you! Whether you’re writing a simple message to a grandparent, a thank you to a teacher or a birthday message for a friend, there are a million reasons to get in touch and the library is happy to help!

This summer as we’ve observed and celebrated the nation’s 250th birthday, we’ve been engaging with analog skills.
