Tuesday was First Grade Library Card Day! The best day of the year!

Each year, every first grade classes at Altamont Elementary School walk to the library, get a tour, and learn all about the upcoming Summer Reading Program. The best part is that many of our friends receive their very first library card! There are few things that warm a librarian's heart more than seeing an awesome kid getting their own library card, and Tuesday was chock full of awesome kids!

Thank you to Ms. Abatto, Ms. Johnson, and Ms. Ciccarelli's classes for joining us!

The Dutch and Germans first settled Altamont nearly 300 years ago. But have you ever wondered what happened to all their colonial-era house? Actually several are still around, you just need to know what to look for.

Join local historian and Albany County legislator Jeff Perlee on Wednesday June 24 at 6:30 for a discussion on the houses and farms of our area during and prior to the American Revolution.

Do you own or manage a business in or around the Village of Altamont? If so, please join us for the next meeting of the Altamont Roundtable on Friday, June 19th from 8am to 9am!

What is the Altamont Roundtable?
The Altamont Roundtable is a collaborative project between Altamont Free Library and the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce. It is a monthly meeting of business owners and managers, community organization leaders and policy makers in and around the Village of Altamont to discuss how we can support one another and work together to plan major community events.

Why are we meeting?
Altamont is a unique and special community that presents both challenges and opportunities to businesses and community groups. We talk about how we can support one another through those challenges and collectively take full advantage of those opportunities in order to see if we can come up with ways to improve the Village for everyone who lives, works, visits and shops here.

If you are able to join us, we'd be grateful for an RSVP by noon on Thursday, June 18th at [email protected] or by phone at (518) 861-7239. Coffee and light breakfast-y things will be served.

One of our favorite things we get to do is to show off the work of some of the incredible artists we have all around us. This month we have the pleasure to present two of the very best!

Altamont Free Library invites you to check out "Beauty Inside & Out" featuring paired paintings by Maria DeAngelo and nature photos by Gail DeAngelo.

We've had the opportunity in the past to exhibit both DeAngelo sisters independently and we're all the more pleased to show them both together!

Thank you, Gail and Maria, for sharing your incredible talent with us!

We are surrounded--literally surrounded--by nature's beauty. We have so many incredible parks, nature preserves and hiking trails within a short drive (or a long walk!) that visiting all of them would fill a well-spent summer and fall.

And that is precisely our challenge to you!

Historic Altamont, Albany County GIS and Altamont Free Library are proud to announce the Helderberg Outdoor Challenge!

We invite you to explore 22 outdoor destinations throughout the Helderberg Region including sites in Altamont, Knox, Berne, Rensselaerville and Voorheesville! There are places that you might have been before, like Thacher State Park and the Huyck Preserve, and ton of hidden gems that you might have never even heard of just waiting for you to discover them!

All you need to do is pay each site a visit and do something outdoorsy: Take a hike, listen to the birds, play frisbee, take a photo, whatever! Log your visits at the Challenge's website at https://helderbergchallenge-albcountygis.hub.arcgis.com/ and when you've collected all 22, you'll win a really fantastic collectable patch!

More information and a full list of the sites can be found online at https://helderbergchallenge-albcountygis.hub.arcgis.com/

Happy trails!

Last Saturday, Altamont Free Library held our annual I Love My Library Gala at the Flowers & Fine Arts Building on the Altamont Fairgrounds. Our honoree for the evening was former Altamont Community Tradition President Laura Shore.

It was an outstanding evening full of good cheer and beautiful surroundings. We were glad to share it with so many of you.

We are incredibly grateful to all of our sponsors for the evening for their support: Andrea Kullman, Homestead Funding Corp., Albany Distilling Company, Leanne Royer Licensed Agent at Venture Fox Realty, Venture Fox Realty Group, Lindsey Giagni - State Farm Insurance Agent, Phillips Hardware & Phillips MiniMart, Vaughn Vision Guilderland, Star + Splendor, Main Street Cafe and Krakat Guitars.

We couldn’t have done it without the incredible work of Maisie's Events and Catering, Allied Brewing, Remedies Wine & Spirits and the Albany Art Room among many, many others. We are also grateful to Amy Anderson, Victoria Shave Chappell and the rest of the Altamont Fair for their help and support.

We are also tremendously grateful to Debra Bailey of Bailey Family Photographers and to our volunteer student photographers Lindsey Hogan, James Davidson and Shane Eisenzopf whose wonderful photos you'll see below. Feel free to tag yourself, and credit the photographers if you share them. Please add your own awesome shots in the comments below!

Finally, we need to thank the amazing Gala Committee for their extraordinary energy, creativity and hard work: Yvette Terplak, Rebecca Meli Curtin, Joleen Rochhill, Amanda Stygar, Nicole Robinson, Leanne Royer, Cortnee Whipple, Christine Goldberg and our incredible Gala Chair, Raelee Grimm. Thank you all!

To all who attended or contributed in any way to the success of the Gala, thank you so, so much for your generous support for our library. It really does take a village.
