You don’t need to be a medical professional to save a life. Anyone can perform CPR. Even you.

Just know two simple steps. If a teen or adult collapses, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest.

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**

September 23, 2026
The Alto-Bowne Township Fire Department mourns the loss of former Fire Chief Gerald Posthumus on Monday, September 21 at the age of 94. Chief Posthumus faithfully served his community on the fire department for 43 years, serving as fire chief for 33 of those years. He retired in 2009 at age 76.
Because Chief Posthumus lived and worked in Alto, owning and operating the Alto Garage, he was generally the first to the fire station for any call. He was fiercely dedicated to the fire department, rarely missing calls - day or night. Once a year, he would go on vacation to a tractor show, saying that he would be gone for a week. He often ended up back in Alto before the week was up, showing up for calls when he was supposed to be on vacation. The day before he was set to retire, the fire department had a house fire in the night. Chief Posthumus drove the first engine out and was there overseeing the incident all night long, fully dedicated to the very end of his last day on the job.
Chief Posthumus spent his career serving the people of Alto. He fought fires, provided medical care, taught kids fire safety and supported community events. He had a positive impact on thousands of lives. He was a true hero to his community and will be sorely missed.

Thanks to everyone who came out to support your local fire department! We had a ton of fun seeing everyone, serving pancakes and having an impromptu parade thru downtown. As you can see by the pictures, a ton of silliness was had.

If you have pictures, we’d love to see in the comments. 📸

Recently, our department has had the opportunity to participate in two valuable trainings alongside several of our neighboring fire departments—including an Aero Med training that we were proud to host at our department, as well as a live fire training we attended.

These trainings are about more than sharpening our skills. They give us the opportunity to build relationships, share knowledge, learn from one another, and strengthen the teamwork between the departments that serve our surrounding communities.

When emergencies happen, department and township lines disappear—we work together with one common goal: providing the best care and service possible to those who need us.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to train, connect, and collaborate with our neighboring departments. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make these trainings possible.
