Today marks the end of an important chapter for our two newest probationary firefighters as they spend their last day in the firehouse before heading off to the next step in their journey. 🚒

On Monday, they begin 10 weeks of Fire Academy SWIC Fire Science. 📚🔥

Joseph Best and Nathan Kuhl — absorb everything you can, ask questions, work hard, and take advantage of every opportunity to learn. You’ve already shown us what you’re capable of, and we have nothing but faith in both of you!

Good luck at the academy! We’ll be cheering you on and looking forward to having you back in the firehouse. 👨‍🚒👨‍🚒

🔥 WHAT A WEEK! 🔥

Our two newest firefighters, Joseph Best and Nathan Kuhl, reported for their first shift with the Alton Fire Department on Monday, August 10th — and they certainly didn’t ease into things!

For their first two weeks, Joseph and Nathan are assigned to day shift, working alongside our crews and learning the ins and outs of the department, station operations, and everything they can from the experienced firefighters around them. After their two weeks with the department, they’ll report to Southwestern Illinois College for Fire Academy! 🚒🔥

Then came Friday! Crews responded to a structure fire on Delta Queen Lane, giving Joseph and Nathan the opportunity to witness their first working fire. It was also Firefighter J. Davison’s first fire as an Alton firefighter!

Sunday brought structure fires on Wyss Ave., where one of our Alton Fire Department Explorers had the opportunity to witness a working fire firsthand.

A HUGE thank you to all of our members who continue to teach, mentor, and lead our newest firefighters and Explorers. We’re proud to have a department that takes the time to show the next generation how the job gets done! Also, appreciation goes out to Survival Fight Ambulance here in Alton for helping to keep us hydrated on scene! It's a village! 👨‍🚒🔥

📚🚒 School Registration Starts Tomorrow! 🚒📚

The Alton Fire Department would like to remind families that Centralized In-Person Registration for the 2026-2027 school year begins tomorrow!

Registration will be held at the Alton High School Gymnasium on July 28, 29, and 30, and all families are required to register in person.

Before you head out, be sure to bring:
✔️ A valid photo ID
✔️ One Category I residency document
✔️ Two Category II residency documents

Registration dates and times are assigned by the student's last name. For the complete schedule and additional registration information, visit altonschools.org or call 618-474-2600.

As you get ready for another school year, don't forget to talk with your children about staying safe—whether it's watching for traffic, knowing what to do in an emergency, or practicing fire safety at home.

🎆❤️🤍💙 Happy Independence Day from the Alton Fire Department! 💙🤍❤️🎆

Today we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy, honor those who have served our country, and spend time with family, friends, and neighbors.

As you enjoy the festivities, please keep safety at the top of your celebration:

🎇 Leave fireworks to the professionals whenever possible.
🔥 Keep grills and fireworks well away from homes, vehicles, dry grass, and anything combustible.
💧 Have a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby if using legal consumer fireworks.
👀 Never allow young children to handle fireworks, and always provide close adult supervision.
🚗 If you're celebrating with alcohol, make a plan for a sober ride home.
🚒 If you see smoke or fire that appears out of control, call 911 immediately.

Whether you're enjoying a backyard barbecue, watching a fireworks show, or gathering with loved ones, we hope your Independence Day is filled with great memories and safe celebrations.

🌩️⚠️ WEATHER ALERT FOR THE RIVERBEND ⚠️ 🌩️

We know the weather forecast is about as reliable as a broken clock sometimes... but when the forecasters start talking about strong storms, it's worth paying attention.

Today's forecast is calling for the possibility of severe weather across the Riverbend, including strong winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms. Hopefully it misses us completely, but it's always better to be prepared than caught off guard.

⚠️ A few quick reminders:

🚫 Stay away from downed power lines — always assume they are energized.
🚫 Never drive through flooded roadways.
🚫 Secure loose outdoor furniture, umbrellas, and decorations before the wind picks up.
🚫 Keep phones charged and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.

Here's hoping the weather experts are overreacting this time, but if the storms do arrive, a little preparation goes a long way. Stay safe, keep an eye on the sky, and look out for your neighbors. 🌩️⚡🌬️

Mutual aid isn’t just a policy — it’s people helping people when it matters most.

Wednesday evening Engine 1814 and the on duty Battalion Chief responded to a Box Alarm in the 400 Block of Whitelaw, East Alton for a fire in a multi-family residence. The crew is pictured opening the table to check for fire extension into the attic. Photo credit to William Roe of the East Alton FD. Alton crews were released to respond back to Alton with the remainder of the on duty shift for an apartment fire in the 700 Block of Oakwood.
