We are often asked ‘what’s taking so long’ when people hear that we filed for federal recognition 32 year ago in 1994 with the request officially publicly announced in the national register in 1995.
The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina achieved full federal recognition on December 18, 2025 after 141 years on the waitlist, and after 175 years waiting the Chinook Indian Nation is still pending.
Federal tribes are now calling tribes like ours who have not yet completed the recognition process frauds or ‘pretendians’ despite the lengthy federal process. We like the hundreds of other pending tribes are doing all we can to prove our legitimacy to the government so don’t believe the negative propaganda federal tribes are pushing bashing pending tribes like us. Federal tribes regularly file discriminatory comments to get tribal applications rejected by the feds to protect funding resources.
You will often hear our leadership say that we have begun the process but it will probably be our grandchildren who complete the journey.

In 2001 Gary Johnson watched his tribe gain federal recognition, only to have it stripped away 18 months later. His son Tony now leads the fight to restore it.

We had a an amazing and busy day at Salem Maritime Museum’s Celebration highlighting Salem’s founding 400 years ago and the national 250th. As always the cardboard boat race was both exciting and hilarious. We were able to get some pics of some of the participant booths prior to the event opening, but once the parade ended the crowds were the largest we have ever seen.

Vote in Honor of a Veteran
American and Alaska Natives serve in the U.S. armed forces at a rate five times the national average. They maintain the highest per-capita involvement of any ethnic or demographic population in the United States military with roughly 19% serving, having nearly 20% of Native American service members being female. The native population serving in the armed forces is about 5% higher than any other ethnic group in the US.

New Hampshire voters have the opportunity to recognize the veterans and service members in their lives who protect our most precious freedom – the right to vote.
To participate in the program, simply use the link below to submit the name of the veteran or service member you are voting in honor of and a short testimonial on what their service means to you. In exchange, the NH Secretary of State’s Office will mail you a “Vote in Honor of a Veteran” lapel pin designed by Navy veteran Jacob Aldridge that you can wear proudly on Election Day.

The Secretary of State’s Office is pleased to launch its “Vote in Honor of a Veteran” program, which gives New Hampshire voters the opportunity to recognize the veterans and service members in their lives who protect our most precious freedom – the right to vote.

A new memorial plaque on Star Island has been unveiled honoring the Pennacook, Abenaki and Wabenaki Indigenous communities whose connection to Star Island spans thousands of years.
The plaque has been installed on the ‘John Smith’ monument on the eastern edge of the island.

The weather was fantastic to tour the dam removal site. This is the first of 2 adjacent dams scheduled to be removed this year in Gonic NH. Our Tribal leaders Paul and Denise (pictured) have been collaborating on numerous dam removals, watershed restoration projects and developing river and watershed management plans throughout NH.
