Dolly was universally loved across generations, political affiliations, and musical genres. She was often described as a national treasure. If you're feeling a deep sense of loss right now, know that this is called parasocial grief, and it is real and completely normal. Most of us never met the celebrities we follow and love, yet we're hearing from all corners how Dolly was a constant source of joy, comfort, and warmth in so many of our lives for decades. When someone that familiar to us passes away, our hearts and minds can process it as a true loss because the emotional bond was real.

Here are a few gentle ways to cope:

• Validate your feelings. Don't beat yourself up or feel silly for crying over someone you didn't know personally. Give yourself permission to grieve.

• Honor her legacy through action. Listen to your favorite songs, watch 9 to 5, or donate to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library or another cause that is meaningful to you to help carry forward her spirit of generosity.

• Connect with others. Share your favorite memories, songs, quotes, or stories with friends, family, or online communities.

Thank you for everything, Dolly. 💜✨

David Kessler, a renowned author, speaker, bereaved son/parent, and expert on grief and loss, is providing a free training for those who are helping others through their grief on September 8 at 3 pm ET. Please see more information below:

"This one-hour training is for anyone who finds themselves showing up for others in grief.

Whether these conversations are in living rooms, offices, support groups or hospital rooms, whether you're a seasoned professional or someone who has been called to this work by your own experience with loss, you belong in this space.

You’ll learn the six core needs of the grieving, a framework that can help you meet people where they are, without fixing, rushing, or bypassing their pain.

You’ll also leave with compassionate, grounded tools to help others move from isolation to connection.

Even if you can’t join live, a replay will be sent to everyone who registers.

Because we don’t just need more grief support.

We need wiser, more human ways to offer it.

Thank you for being someone who cares deeply."
