September 19 — Ukrainian Borsch Day at The Yard in Altoona!🇺🇸🇺🇦

We are two Ukrainian sisters who have dreamed of creating a special Ukrainian tradition here in the Chippewa Valley.

As long as Borsch House exists, we want to celebrate Ukrainian Borsch Day every year by serving free borsch to our guests.

For us, borsch is much more than just food. It is part of our home, our history, our family memories, and the culture we brought with us from Ukraine.

The culture of cooking Ukrainian borsch has been recognized by UNESCO as part of Ukraine’s intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding. That is why it means so much to us to share this tradition with as many people as possible and help keep it alive.

Every time someone cooks Ukrainian borsch at home, shares it with family or friends, or simply tells someone about this tradition, it helps keep a small part of Ukrainian culture alive.

If more people discover, taste, and come to love Ukrainian borsch because of Borsch House, then we know we are doing this for a reason. ❤️

On September 19, we would love to welcome you and introduce you to a little piece of Ukrainian culture.

That day at The Yard, you will be welcomed by us in traditional Ukrainian clothing. There will be Ukrainian music, a small Ukrainian-style market with souvenirs and cultural items, Ukrainian food, and lots of fun.

You will also have a chance to learn about Petrykivka painting, one of the most beloved and recognizable forms of Ukrainian decorative art. We invited a talented artist -Horvat who will share her work, explain this tradition, and show why it is so loved in Ukraine.

Come celebrate Ukrainian Borsch Day with us and help us keep this beautiful tradition alive — even far from Ukraine. 💛💙

🚸Ready or not — school starts tomorrow!🚸
After three months of summer break, traffic around our city’s schools will increase significantly. Please take a moment to review these safety reminders as students return to the classroom.

For Motorists:
• Slow down in school zones – Speed limits are 15 mph, and children can be unpredictable.
• Stay alert near crosswalks – Yield to pedestrians within the crosswalk.
• Avoid distractions – Put the phone away and stay prepared for sudden stops.
• Watch for school buses – Flashing yellow lights mean the bus is preparing to stop. Flashing red lights mean you must stop—no passing in either direction unless you're on a divided roadway.

For Pedestrians:
• Use marked crosswalks – Drivers are more likely to see you.
• Make eye contact with drivers – Never assume a driver sees you.
• Yield to vehicles – Pedestrians must yield to vehicles before crossing.
• Cyclists & other wheeled devices – Follow the rules of the road, including stopping at stop signs. On sidewalks, maintain a 10 mph speed limit and be cautious around others.

Let’s work together to keep our students, families, and neighborhoods safe throughout the school year. Stay alert, slow down, and share the road responsibly.

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE: As school starts in most Wisconsin districts this week, you’ll start to see more school buses on the roads again. Here’s a reminder of what the different colored lights on a school bus indicate and what you should do if they’re flashing:

🟠Amber Warning Lights: The school bus is about to stop. Slow down and prepare to stop.

🔴Red Warning Lights: Stop at least 20 feet from the bus whether approaching from either direction. The only exception is if you are traveling on the other side of a divided road that’s separated by a median or other physical barrier.

With school starting in less than a week, it’s a great time for a quick reminder about school bus and school zone safety! 🚌🏫
As students head back to school, our roads will be a little busier with buses, parents, students walking and biking, and increased traffic around schools.
Here are a few important reminders:
🛑 STOP for school buses! When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, you must stop and remain stopped until the lights are off and the stop arm is retracted.
🚸 Slow down in school zones. Give yourself extra time and be prepared for children who may unexpectedly enter or cross the roadway.
👀 Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. Children may not always be predictable, so stay alert and keep your eyes on the road.
📵 Put the phone down. Distracted driving is dangerous anytime, but especially around schools and school buses.
↔️ Give buses plenty of space. Avoid passing a stopped bus and remember that buses make frequent stops as they pick up and drop off students.
🚗 Be patient during drop-off and pick-up. A few extra minutes of patience can help keep everyone safe.

Music will start at 6:30pm on the OakLeaf Surgical Amphitheater in River Prairie with food trucks and an artist market on the plaza!

Bonus: the 2026 Back to School Ice Cream Social will also be taking place on the plaza from 6-8pm!
