We are less than a week away from the 102nd Pennsylvania Farm show. It runs from January 2nd - 6th at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Our friends at PHMC always have incredible things to see and do. Make sure you stop by and see them.

This year, state archaeologists at the Pennsylvania Farm Show will focus on "Foragers to Farmers: The development of #agriculture in Pennsylvania.” Don't miss the dugout canoe, a corn grinding activity for children & recipes for cooking wild foods.

Our officers even rescue wildlife during the holidays! On December 25, Wildlife Conservation Officer Amanda Isett received a call that an injured snowy owl was stuck inside a fenced area at Smithfield State Correctional Insitute. WCO Isett captured the injured owl and placed it in a crate for safe transport to Centre Wildlife Care for rehabilitation. The owl is expected to make a full recovery.

Snowy owls are infrequent visitors to Pennsylvania. However, this winter, you may have more opportunities to view them. Visit the Pennsylvania eBird site to learn about the northern conditions that result in snowy owl migrations: http://ebird.org/content/pa/news/another-snowy-winter/

Important information to keep in mind if you or you know anyone planning to do professional photography at National Park sites along the Greenway.

PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AT JOHNSTOWN FLOOD NATIONAL MEMORIAL:

The Johnstown Flood National Memorial is a popular spot for wedding photos, family photos, and senior photos. In most instances, photographers do not need any type of special use permit for these type of photos.

Special Use Permits DO APPLY in the following circumstances:
1. They are using multiple props in the photo (and items they can hold in their hand like flowers don't count as a prop) and or
2. They are setting up photography equipment like lights, screens, big tripods, constructing a set (IE. items that could get in the way of regular visitors) and/or
3. They are using paid models (wedding parties, graduates, and family reunion folks are not considered models since they are not being paid to be in the photo) and/or
4. The photos they are taking will be used to advertise a product and/or
5. The photo will be taken at a location in the park that is normally closed to visitors.
6. Or taking the photo in the chosen location would cause an unsafe situation i.e. a photographer is not allowed to stand a wedding party so that they block a doorway or block a stairway, impeding regular visitor traffic.

If any of the above six criteria are met, the photographer will probably need a special use permit. For more clarification and further information, please contact Doug Bosley, Special Use Permit Coordinator at (814) 886-6162. ~NMK

Pennsylvania forests continue to show excellent color, with central, northeastern, east-central, and northwestern counties grabbing the spotlight. 🍁🍂

The recent change to more fall-like temperatures should push foliage toward peak throughout the state. Expect the lower one-third of the state to enter peak foliage by the end of the week. Week 5 #PAFallFoliage report ➡️ http://bit.ly/2gTfO73 #FallinPA

It takes 3-5 minutes to plant one tree seedling. Now imagine a two-acre site with 400 new seedlings to plant. Without help from our conservation partners and volunteers, it would take one WPC staff person approx. 1,600 minutes or 26.6 hours to plant!

General information

The Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway™ is a 320-mile corridor that follows the historic path of the Main Line Canal System. It intends to serve as a physical connector that improves opportunities for public access, linkage to important destinations, and economic development. It is not a single, long-distance trail for unimpeded travel. The trail not only serves as a physical connector, but also connects people to the unique land that resides within it. Whether this is traveling on the many unique trails by bike, or if you’re in the mood to observe the landscapes by water. No matter what adventure you are looking for, there is something that can be found to satisfy.
