Heather Sievers for Iowa

Heather Sievers for Iowa Iowa-born and raised, Nurse, Healthcare Leader, Wife, Mother of a child with rare disabilities, community advocate, Founder of Advocates for Iowa’s Children.

Iowa House Candidate D40. Ready for the next battle. Paid for by Heather Sievers for Iowa Hello. My name is Heather Sievers, running for Iowa House District 40, representing Altoona and the eastern side of Des Moines. I have learned so much from listening to people and advocating for them across the state, and I want to do more. I have seen how the current political landscape has hurt Iowans and c

ontinues to create a divide in our people. It’s time for this to change. My goals are to ensure that the voice of the community is heard, to reduce this political divide in our people, and focus instead on protecting rights and improving quality of life for all who live here. I will always choose our people over politics. This has inspired me to run for the Iowa House of Representatives seat for District 40 elections 2024. I promise to fight for better funding for our public schools, preservation our Area Education Agencies that serve all children and educators across the state, increase our minimum wage and find solutions to Iowa’s critical workforce shortage, focus on tax reform and reducing property taxes, support advancements in our healthcare system and rebuild our nursing workforce, advocate for our elderly and nursing homes, promote legislation that improves quality of life for people with disabilities, and protect all people against discrimination and working to preserve rights of all people across this state. Your voice matters to me. I want to hear from all of you and what you would like to see improve in the future. You can reach out to me anytime at [email protected]

A little bit more about me:

I am Iowa-born in Dubuque and raised in rural Panora, Iowa. I am honored to call this state home. I graduated from Adel-Desoto-Minburn high school at the age of 16 and have attended Iowa State University, Cornell College and University of Iowa, finishing my education with a dual masters in counseling psychology and clinical nurse leadership. I started my nursing career at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa working as a Nurse Preceptor and Charge Nurse before moving to Minnesota to be with my husband, Britt, to start a family in 2014. My husband is also Iowa-born and raised, a proud union member and an industrial mechanic. I spent the last 12 years working as a healthcare leader focusing on quality patient care, transformation and innovation, and am excited to start serving UnityPoint Health in Des Moines as their performance improvement manager starting in April 2024. As a mother of a child with rare disabilities, I am invested in ensuring equity and quality of services for all vulnerable or underserved populations and am the founder of Advocates for Iowa’s Children, a non-partisan group supporting advocacy for thousands of parents, children, educators and service providers across the state. Personally, I know how hard it can be to navigate complex systems, especially if you have a child or family member with unique needs. I wanted to create a group where we can learn from each other, to hear what the community needs and subsequently work together to advocate for what is best for our people. When we had our daughter in 2017, we knew she was going to need a lot of support, and it took years before we could get her diagnosis of Smith-Magenis Syndrome. There was about 18 months where my husband and I had to make the hard decision for me to quit my job to care for her. To stay together as a family while my husband was forced to pick up travel Millwright work to make ends meet, we sold our home and most of our belongings and moved into a camper so we could travel together as a family and figure this out. Family means everything to me. In 2019, we moved back to Iowa to settle down closer to our family. We knew that this would be the place to make sure she has the best life we could give her. I am proud to be an Iowan and proud to call this state home, but I know there is a lot of work to be done. Your donations to my campaign are critical to my ability to be elected into office and are sincerely appreciated. Good news! Finally some progress in the right direction but I agree we have a lot more work to do. We definitely need funding to go into this, but I also know that funding doesn’t solve everything. It really is how we build the partnerships and collaborative programs needed to help repair the water quality problem here. Implementation and how we implement things matters the most. We have to keep building on this as a priority in our state. It matters to everybody in my district.

STATEMENT: IOWA HOUSE DEMOCRATS APPLAUD INCLUSION OF THEIR WATER QUALITY PRIORITIES IN NEW LAW

Joint Statement from State Representative Austin Baeth, State Representative Kenan Judge, Rep. Elinor A. Levin, and State Rep. Mary Madison:

“Iowans have been asking us to take action to clean up our waterways. Earlier this year, Iowa House Democrats introduced a comprehensive plan to clean up Iowa’s water through stronger investments, better monitoring, and partnerships with farmers. We’re encouraged to see parts of that vision reflected in this legislation, but there is still much more work to do. While this additional funding is a step in the right direction, it falls far short of the bold action needed to address Iowa’s water crisis.

Clean water is essential to Iowa’s health, economy, and future, and we must continue working together to make it a top priority.”

This is really sad news. I’m really sorry about all the families impacted. I know so many families across iowa are thinking about you right now.

I really believe we need to rebuild services for domestic violence programs, and mental health services in Iowa to be able to make an impact on this. Most of these programs have been cut at the State level while gun restrictions continue to be loosened across our state.

Muscatine police believe 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland shot and killed six family members on Monday. When confronted by police, McFarland took his own life.

Accountability matters. I was just down at the Ashley Hinson rally today. It’s the same old stuff. The same old Lies. Her words mean nothing because her actions tell us everything. Iowans deserve better.

Change required sacrifice, and I’m so grateful my for my family for being on this journey with me. I won’t give up, I got your back and so does my entire family.
