You can also simply register for the program and choose not to display the decals —by simply registering, our dispatchers will receive the info in their system if a call comes in from your residence, so they can let first responders know.

Does someone in your household have an invisible disability?

The Etowah County Sheriff's Office is proud to offer the ECSO Invisible Disability Initiative — a free program that helps Emergency Responders better serve residents with invisible disabilities before they ever knock on your door.

By placing a free decal near your front door or in the rear window of your vehicle, you alert arriving deputies and first responders that an occupant may not respond to verbal commands, may hide or wander, or may have no awareness of danger. That information can make all the difference in how a situation is handled.

Not comfortable with a decal? No problem. You can still register — and we will flag your address in our 911 dispatch system so responders arrive informed.

This program is completely free. Decals can be mailed to you or picked up at the Etowah County Sheriff's Office.

Here’s the reality—going to the Emergency Room by ambulance does not get you seen faster.

We receive calls all the time where this was the expectation, so let’s clear it up.

At the hospital, patients are seen based on how serious their condition is—not how they arrived. Whether you walk in, are dropped off, or go by ambulance, you will be triaged the same way. If your condition is not urgent, you may still wait.

When you call 911 for non-emergencies just to get quicker access, it ties up ambulances and firefighters who may be needed for life-threatening situations—heart attacks, strokes, serious accidents. That delay can have real consequences for someone else in your community.

There’s also a financial side. Ambulance transport is expensive, and if it’s determined to be medically unnecessary, your insurance may not cover the cost—leaving you with a significant bill.

We’re here for emergencies. If you’re experiencing a true emergency, call us—we will respond immediately and provide the care you need.

But if it’s not an emergency, please consider other options like urgent care or contacting your primary care provider.
