The lack of interest in our EMT class from our community has been… disheartening. Frustrating. Defeating.
It’s been ten years since our last group of EMTs joined our service. 2016. From that group, only four are still active with Altura Ambulance. In those ten years, only one other EMT has joined—after taking a class through her college. This is not enough.
We’ve spent countless hours brainstorming ways to encourage people to take the EMT class and join our ambulance service. How do we help the community understand how important it is to keep Altura Ambulance? What if we offered the option to join a class in a neighboring town? What if we paid for it? What if we even reimbursed classroom time?
We tried.
We discussed.
We sent flyers.
We held a Town Hall meeting.
Our current members pleaded for help to keep this service alive.
And still, no one committed long enough to get certified and start volunteering.
So we adapted again. We thought the drive to another city might be the barrier, so we made plans to host the class right here in Altura, fully paid for. We truly believed the convenience and cost coverage would finally be the encouragement people needed.
We were wrong.
What are we missing? Why has not a single Altura resident stepped forward to help? We’re running out of options, and it’s heartbreaking for a crew that cares so deeply.
Some of our current members have been serving for 20, 30, even 40 years. They’re tired. They’re worried. Who will step up when they no longer can? Who will step up now?
If you’ve ever thought about becoming an EMT… if you’ve ever wanted to give back… if you believe Altura deserves immediate, local first aid—please reach out. Your community truly needs you. Registration closes December 19th.
