Modoc National Wildlife Refuge

Modoc National Wildlife Refuge The 7,021-acre Modoc NWR is in Modoc County, just southeast of the town of Alturas, California. This pattern is reversed in the spring.

The Refuge is part of a larger complex of mid-elevation wetlands and lakes of northeastern California and is strategically situated to meet the needs of waterfowl and other migratory birds of the Pacific Flyway. Modoc Refuge acts as a migration and staging area for ducks, geese, and other wetland birds on the southward migration funnel into this region. After feeding and resting on the Refuge, the

y continue to the Central and Imperial Valleys of California and other wintering areas. The Refugeโ€™s wetlands and adjacent uplands are also an important nesting area for ducks, geese, greater sandhill cranes, and several other species of marsh birds.

๐ŸŒ Happy Earth Day! ๐ŸŒฑ Celebrated since 1970, this day reminds us of our responsibility to protect our planet. Landmark acts like the Clean Air Act and NEPA shaped our environmental legacy, leading to the creation of the EPA. In 2026, we focus on โ€œOur Power, Our Planet,โ€ emphasizing that environmental progress is sustained by daily actions of communities, educators, workers, and families protecting where they live and work! ๐ŸŒ„
๐Ÿงญ Let's also celebrate National Environmental Education Week โ€”a vital initiative established in 2005 to enhance awareness and understanding of our environment. Remember, knowledge is power! ๐Ÿ“
Letโ€™s commit to educating and protecting our communities for a brighter future! ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿฆ‡Happy International Bat Appreciation Day!๐Ÿฆ‡

Did you know, with over 1,400 different bat species world-wide, bats make up nearly 20% of all mammal species? Bat species vary in size, shape, habitat, behavior and so much more. Whether theyโ€™re pollinating plants like cloves and agave, dispersing seeds across the rainforest or saving U.S. farmers over $3 billion per year in pest control, bats play a major role in protecting the foods we eat and grow. ๐Ÿ“ธ Ann Froschauer/USFWS

We recently had what appears to be a woman ring turned into the visitor building here at the Modoc NWR.

If you have lost a ring recently, please stop in to pick it up. You must be able to describe the ring without looking at it first to ensure it get back to the rightful owner.

Have a great day.
