🚨 What’s behind the rise in cyclosporiasis nationwide? Here’s what Californians need to know.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite, usually spread through contaminated food or water.

🌟 Good news for California:
There are no known local outbreaks right now, and no California occurrences are linked to the multistate outbreaks under CDC investigation.

📊 California cases are below last year at this time:

• Down from 80 cases (currently 41 from Jan. - June 2026)
• Most California cases are tied to recent travel

🔹 How to protect yourself:

When traveling, drink bottled or boiled water and eat only fully cooked or peeled foods

Refrigerate cut, peeled, or cooked produce within two hours to prevent bacterial growth

Wash hands with soap and water before and after handling raw produce

Rinse fruits and vegetables under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking

Fresh raspberries, cilantro, basil, snow peas, and mixed salads – have been linked to past outbreaks in the U.S.
