Price Creek Watershed Project

The Price Creek Watershed project is a cooperative effort to improve water quality in Price Creek and the Iowa River. Contact Rose for more information!

To learn about the project, visit the photo album titled, "About the Project". Price Creek is a 13 mile long stream located in SE Benton County and NE Iowa County. The watershed begins north of the town of Marengo and ends below the historic village of Amana where it flows into the Iowa River and eventually the Coralville Reservoir. Both Price Creek and the Iowa River are listed on the state’s 303

d List of Impaired Waters because of high bacteria levels. In addition to high bacteria levels, soil erosion and excess nutrients are also a concern. As a landowner or farm operator in the watershed, you have the opportunity to help improve this valuable resource. Cost share is available for practices that may not only improve the value and profitability of your operation but can also contribute significantly to improving water quality by reducing the amount of sediment, nutrients and bacteria leaving the land.

Yesterday, partners gathered at the Hotel Millwright to discuss the sustainable storm water practices that were installed throughout the property. Amana doubled down on sustainability by repurposing historic buildings and adding green landscaping. Permeable pavers, native plantings and a bioretention cell treat nearly all of the runoff before it reaches Price Creek and the historic Mill Race!

Throughout the Price Creek Watershed Project farmers, landowners and businesses worked together to capture 20,000 tons of sediment per year - that is enough to fill a line of dump trucks 13 miles long - the length of Price Creek! Congratulations to everyone who has had a hand in a Price Creek Project - big or small you're a part of this success story. 👏👏👏

Tucked behind the Amana Festhalle barn is the first Urban Conservation Project in the Amana Colonies. Signage has been added to share more information about the different types of water quality practices that were installed. Practices include permeable pavers, soil quality restoration, bioretention cells and native landscaping. If you are interested in adding a water quality practice to your yard, contact your county's Soil and Water Conservation District!
