The blinks this morning were a result of transmission wires bouncing in the wind between transmission poles. When the wires touch each other, the blink occurs. After a few short blinks and one longer one the diesel generators automatically started up.
Our transmission provider actually shut the power off to our substation to protect their wires from getting damaged. Our customers didn't see another blink since we were already generating. The power was restored to our substation at 8:30. So we were generating for over 3.5 hours this morning.

Fyi, the diesel generators are running through the night because the Grid Operators have the need. It is because of the extreme cold weather around us and unknown about potential loss of transmission lines some distance away, but potential to affect us.

STAY WARM EVERYONE!!

Currently running until tomorrow midnight because of the widespread extreme cold. (Sunday night)

A long time resident found this a couple years ago while cleaning out some storge room and shared it with me. It celebrates the electification of Amana in 1937. Lots of changes since then. The Service Company will turn 90 years old in February 2027!!

A little late comment for all: Freezing weather is approaching. Do your winterizing chores: remove the hose from outside faucets, close up all the cracks and holes (around wires and pipes going through walls) to keep out bugs, mice, etc.. this will also stop cold air leaking into the house.
Have your furnaces checked over before it gets nasty cold and you have to wait for service technicians to fit you in their schedule. Break downs come at the poorest times.
Same goes for your car, get a good snow/scraper, a blanket, -35F windshield washer fluid installed. Maybe add some snack bars or other nonperishable food in case you get stuck in the boondocks and have to wait (even through a snow storm) for help to come. A good flashlight, extra batteries, etc.
BE PREPARED AND SAFE!

This bill (now hf838 &/or sf 535) will come to the floor to debate electric transmission monopoly or competition. Please contact your Iowa state legislators regarding the Energy bill and ask them to remove the ROFR (Right of First Refusal). Your involvement could make a difference in future transmission rate increases by 20-30%!!!!!

The question of who should build needed electric transmission projects has been the source of much controversy in recent years. In some states, a competitive bidding process can be used to determine which organizations get to build, own, and maintain certain new transmission projects. Other states o...

Poweshiek Rural Water Association put out a mandatory conservation effort for their water customers. This ban does not affect Amana Society Service Company Customers. PWA does have a water system in South Amana, however they have had some issues with a few wells and are in the process of adjusting for that. They have a larger customer base than the ASSC water system and their demand is growing and it is coincident to the long term drought.
The ASSC water system currently has a stagnant number of customers (little to no population growth) and adequate well capacity. As with any well water system operator we constantly monitor the water depth in our wells. Also many are positioned close to the river and most all shallow aquifers flow toward a river, thus our wells are performing as expected.
PWA has a plan and will resolve their issue as soon as they can, meanwhile it is wise on their part to institute a conservation order to ensure they maintain good operating parameters (flow and pressure to name a few).

The Poweshiek Water Association (PWA) has implemented a mandatory water conservation order for Tama and Amana Systems ahead of the warmer months of the year.

There is a bill HF 2551 going through the Iowa House and Senate that could impact your electric bill. Take a look at the attachment and then contact your Iowa Legislators to let them know if you support higher prices or support competition (lower prices, vote NO on the bill). Then tell your friends and neighbors. Bills are moving fast as they near funnel deadlines.

The residents and businesses of Amana lost power for nearly an hour today (12/14/23) due to a fault in some cables in the substation. The fault has been removed and power restored.

10/09/2023

An outage occurred this morning around 10 AM due to an issue on the transmission line. It took the grid operator a short time to locate the likely area for linemen to go inspect for the cause. Once the location and parts identified, the parts were replaced (in a substation about 5 miles away). The power was restored to Aman at 2:00 PM via the grid and our generators were shutdown.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us in Amana.

08/30/2023

ASSC experienced an outage between 9 and 10 am on 8/30/23. Although very short it still disrupts business and home life. The generators automatically started and restored power, but have since been shutdown as offsite power has returned. Our neighbors on the same transmission line experienced the same outage, thus we believe it was caused by/occurred outside our system. We have asked our transmission provider for feedback regarding the incident and will share it when more info becomes available.
