Area Agency on Aging of the Panhandle

The Area Agency on Aging of the Panhandle serves as the advocate for the Panhandle’s elderly population.

To accomplish its mission of promoting dignity, independence and quality of life for older people, the AAA offers a range of comprehensive and coordinated programs designed to assist the region’s elderly population and the families and friends who care for them. The AAA provides services to individuals age 60 and over and their caregivers of the 26 counties of the Panhandle. Funding for the agency

is comprised of federal, state, and local funds. The Area Agency on Aging provides the planning, coordination and implementation of many services. Eligible participants can take advantage of such programs as congregate and home delivered meals, emergency response services, adult day care, transportation, minor home repairs/modifications, homemaker services, personal care assistance, and legal assistance/representation. Information and assistance, benefits counseling and nursing home ombudsman are also provided.

Volunteer Ombudsmen play an important role in supporting residents of long-term care communities. Through regular visits and conversations, volunteers listen to residents, learn about their concerns, and help advocate for their rights and well-being.

The Area Agency on Aging is joining in the fight against Alzheimer's on August 29th at Sam Houston park!

The walk to end Alzheimer's is the largest support group of the year with activities, entertainment, food trucks and more!

This event is free to attend and very rewarding!

So grab you friendly pet, rowdy kids and your sunglasses and join us!

The Texas Panhandle heat has been no joke lately! 🥵☀️

With temperatures reaching into the triple digits recently—and more hot weather ahead—it's especially important for caregivers to keep an eye on older adults and those who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness.

Heat exhaustion can quickly become heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. Knowing the warning signs and having a plan to stay cool can make all the difference.

Encourage regular hydration
Keep the home as cool as possible
Check on loved ones regularly
Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
Have a plan if air conditioning isn't available

Our August Caregiver Assistance Newsletter includes helpful information on recognizing heat-related illness, what to do in an emergency, and ways to prevent heat stroke indoors.

Married couple: Income up to $1,824/month | Resources up to $14,910

August Caregiver Support Group – You're Invited! 💙

Caregiving can be rewarding, but it can also be overwhelming. Sometimes, putting our thoughts on paper can help us process the emotions we carry every day.

Join us this month as we explore "Writing What We Carry: The Benefits of Journaling." No writing experience is needed—just come as you are. Together, we'll discuss how journaling can reduce stress, process emotions, and provide a healthy outlet for the caregiving journey.
