“Changing the world…one child at a time.” These words aren’t just our motto; these are the words our staff and foster parents live by. Every minute of every day, Texas children fall victim at the hands of their parents. They are abused, neglected, and mistreated in ways that the general public cannot begin to imagine. The children enter the doors of A World For Children foster homes with terror, u

ncertainty, physical scars, and emotional trauma. A World For Children’s foster parents, along with the 24-hour support of A World For Children’s staff, spend every day changing uncertainty into undying stability, mending physical injuries, and providing in-depth treatment for emotional trauma. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency, A World For Children contracts with and is licensed by the State of Texas to provide foster and foster-to-adopt services for abused and neglected children across the State. Our agency began in 1997 with a single office in Round Rock. Today, while our corporate office remains in Round Rock, A World For Children is now represented in all 12 regions of the State, with offices in Amarillo, Big Spring, Brownwood, Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, McAllen, Round Rock, San Antonio, Tyler, and Victoria. Our extensive reach allows foster parents in all areas of the State to have an office close to their home to provide any support they may need. At A World For Children, we pride ourselves on being more than simply a corporation—we’re one big extended family. Our staff bonds with our foster parents on a personal level and our administration knows all 350 families on a first-name basis. The focus is not on churning a profit but is instead on ensuring that every member of the family feels the love and support that is so vital for the complete healing of the children that are served. Since 1997, the family at A World For Children has given extraordinary service to over 7000 children. A World For Children is always looking for new family members that share the vision that the future can truly be better by touching the life of just one child. Please browse our website or contact one of our offices for more information about our organization, how to become a foster family or other ways you can help to support the children and famlies of A World For Children.

A World For Children Amarillo kicked off Foster Parent Appreciation with a fun family event at Maxwell's Pumpkin Farm! It was a beautiful day to celebrate the incredible families we serve. Children ran and played, dug in the sand, and enjoyed some special time with their families. Adults connected with other foster parents, played like kids again and had the gift of enjoying their families.
We celebrate the incredible growth in our children, the bravery of each child we serve, the grit and compassion of our foster parents, and all the small sacred moments of raising children!

There is a huge need for more people to step up to become licensed foster parents! What if this month was the month you said yes? 🥰Currently, there are 982 children in the Texas Panhandle in foster care. AWFC Amarillo homes were able to place five of the children needing placement last month.

According to state data, 13% of children needing foster care placement in Potter or Randall counties in 2025 were placed within their original county. Under 60% were placed within the same region, which extends just south of Lubbock.

Jarah Mendoza, executive director for the Amarillo Area Court Appointed Special Advocates, said that the organization serves children in foster care across seven counties in the Panhandle. Once a CASA volunteer is matched with a child, the volunteers commit to visit the child and their siblings at a minimum of once a month. Mendoza said that due to the limited number of foster homes in the area, children are often placed in areas throughout the state.

Mendoza said that CASA acts in the best interest of the child and voices recommendations to judges and the Texas Department of Family Protective Services. To maintain neutrality, the organization does not make placement decisions, license foster homes, or transport children. Mendoza said that in serving as advocates, she and her volunteers recognize how changes in location affect the children, and CASA most commonly advocates for the children to be placed as close to home or their family as possible.

“It's always been a barrier that kids are placed far away, unfortunately, and it's always been our desire that they be placed closer to home,” Mendoza said.

The Amarillo Tribune reported last year on the passage of SB 513 by Sen. Kevin Sparks (R-Midland) last year. The bill established a pilot program for rural community-based care to keep children closer to their hometowns. The Texas Department of Family Services began transitioning to a community-based care model in 2017, contracting with community nonprofits.

St. Francis Ministries is a nonprofit, faith-based organization is the contractor for the Panhandle region, in charge of overseeing the placement and care of foster children within the region through the Department of Family Services. The organization provides and manages foster care placements, family reunification, case management, and in-home prevention services.
