💔 Heartbreaking News 💔
It is with heavy hearts that we share that Paddles, our young beaver, has passed away.
A visual necropsy revealed severely distended, fluid-filled intestines, suggesting possible GI stasis. We are sending her to Texas Tech for a full necropsy in hopes of finding more answers and helping us better understand what happened.
For the past six weeks, Paddles had been experiencing loose stool. During that time, our Veterinarian Team pursued extensive diagnostics and treatment, including multiple f***l examinations, culture and sensitivity testing, X-rays, ultrasound imaging, probiotics, and medications aimed at supporting her gastrointestinal tract. Despite every effort, her condition did not improve.
Gastrointestinal stasis can occur in hindgut-fermenting mammals such as rabbits, beavers, and horses. One possible contributing factor is that Paddles came into care at an extremely young age. When she was rescued, she weighed just under one pound. Animals raised away from their mothers at such a young age may miss important opportunities to develop healthy gut flora, including exposure to beneficial microorganisms normally obtained through maternal f***s.
Paddles touched so many hearts during her short time with us. She was loved deeply, and we are grateful for every moment we had with her. Thank you to everyone who followed her journey, supported her care, and cheered her on.
We will share any additional findings once the full necropsy results are available.
Rest easy, sweet Paddles.
