A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of Illinois, Indiana and Iowa until 1 PM CDT.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for our entire area until 2:00 PM this afternoon. The primary threat is destructive winds (some of which could be in excess of 80 mph). Tornadoes may occur, as well.

Have multiple ways to receive warnings and a plan to quickly get to shelter if needed.

A QUICK WEATHER SIREN PSA

We have seen some questions and concerns regarding why the outdoor warning sirens did not sound during the storms that moved through our area last night, so we wanted to provide a little clarification.

The Amboy Fire Protection District received a call for wires down near Sleepy Hollow Road and Mazy Road at approximately 9:48 PM, as the storm was moving through the area.

At that time, there were no active tornado warnings for our area and no radar indications of a tornado or significant straight-line wind threat that would have warranted activation of the outdoor warning sirens.

At approximately 10:28 PM, the Lee County Early Warning System sent out a Tornado Warning notification indicating that a storm approximately 8 miles east of Amboy was capable of producing tornadoes. The warning itself had an expiration time of 10:22 PM.

WHAT DOES THE TORNADO SIREN MEAN?

Outdoor warning sirens are designed primarily to alert people who are outside that a dangerous weather situation may be occurring and that they should seek shelter immediately.

If you hear the siren, don't ignore it. Go indoors, check a trusted source for information, and determine what action you need to take.

It is also important to understand that sirens are only one part of the warning system. They are not designed to be your only source of severe weather information.

We strongly encourage everyone to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including:

- Emergency/weather alerts on your phone
- NOAA Weather Radio
- Local television
- Trusted weather websites and apps

Most importantly, don't wait for a siren to decide where you will take shelter. When severe weather threatens, know in advance where your safest shelter is.

The Amboy Fire Protection District takes the safety of our community seriously. We understand that hearing sirens can provide an important sense of warning, but the absence of a siren does not mean there is no severe weather threat.

Stay weather aware, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and most importantly — stay safe!
