On Friday, a Lee County Jury returned a verdict of guilty convicting Sherry Guzman of aggravated assault and felony murder for the July 31, 2020 death of her husband Robert Guzman. Judge Jimmie H. Brown sentenced the defendant to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Region Three of the GBI investigated the case with the assistance of the Lee County Sheriff's Office. The case was prosecuted by Senior ADA Cania Brown-Gordon with the assistance of ADA Robert Perrine, DA Investigators Miles O'Quinn and Renee Stewart-Lloyd, victim advocate LeeAnn Austin, and legal secretary Julie Moreau. We are grateful to provide some closure and justice to the family of this former Marine.

On Wednesday, a Sumter County jury returned a verdict of guilty in State v. Eric Rommer Lewis for murder and aggravated assault based on the November 25, 2020 shooting of Kedrick Williams. Chief Judge R. Rucker Smith sentenced the defendant to life in prison without the possibility of parole. This case was prosecuted by Chief ADA Tami Peavy-Owen with the assistance of ADA Levi Lyman-Barner and the support of DA Investigator Ossie Evans, Victim Advocate Tiffany Tatum, and Legal Assistant Brittney Singley.

On Friday, another Sumter County jury returned a verdict of guilty in State v. Thomas Capps for murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony for the December 21, 2022 shooting of Christopher York. Judge W. James Sizemore sentenced the defendant to life with the possibility of parole plus five years. This case was prosecuted by DA Lewis R. Lamb with the support of ADA Trevor Vanzant, DA Investigator Renee Stewart-Lloyd, Victim Advocate LeeAnn Turner, and Legal Assistant Cathy Williams.

On Monday, Adan Panzo entered a plea of guilty to two counts of malice murder for the 2024 murder of one-year-old and three-year-old siblings by arson in Webster County. Chief Judge Smith sentenced the defendant to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. This case was prosecuted by DA Lewis R. Lamb with the assistance of DA Investigator Stephen Douglas and Victim Advocate LeeAnn Turner.

All three cases were investigated by Region 3 of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations. Thank you to the Webster County Sheriff's Office and the Sumter County Sheriff's Office for support and security throughout this trial week and to the citizens of Sumter County for honoring their juror summons. We are grateful for the opportunity to bring justice and closure to the families of these victims.

A Sumter County jury returned a verdict of guilty on Wednesday in the State v. Joshua M. Lucas. Lucas was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony stemming from a 2021 drive-by shooting. Chief Judge R. Rucker Smith sentenced Lucas to 45 years with the first 15 years to be served in prison. This case was investigated by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office with assistance from Schley County law enforcement. Chief ADA Tami Peavy-Owen and ADA Levi Lyman Barner prosecuted the case. We are grateful to resolve this case and finally give some closure to the victims.

On Tuesday September 18, 2025, a Stewart County jury found Jerrell Staples guilty of murder in the April 26, 2024, shooting death of Jason Jones in Lumpkin, Georgia. Chief Superior Court Judge Rucker Smith sentenced Staples to life in prison. The case was investigated by the Region Three of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in coordination with the Lumpkin Police Department. Assistant District Attorney Trevor Vanzant led this trial with the assistance of the DA's office Stewart County prosecution team-- Senior ADA Cania Brown Gordon, DA investigator Renee Stewart-Lloyd, victim advocate Tiffany Tatum, and legal secretary Julie Moreau. We are grateful for the opportunity to bring justice and closure to the victim's family in this case.

The District Attorney’s Office for the Southwestern Judicial Circuit has an opening for a legal secretary. The following duties are normal for this position: provide clerical support and work directly with Assistant District Attorneys and Investigators; prepare, receive, and file legal documents; create and maintain paper and electronic files; and perform a variety of receptionist duties, including answering phones and greeting and assisting visitors. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Preferred Qualifications: a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent and a minimum of two years secretarial experience, preferably as a legal secretary. Knowledge of or experience in the criminal justice/court system is a plus.

Superior interpersonal skills and a positive attitude are necessary qualifications. This position includes State of Georgia benefits. Competitive salary, commensurate with experience.

All candidates are subject to a background check. Applicants selected for hire will be subject to fingerprinting, a full criminal history background check, a motor vehicle driver’s history check and pre-employment drug screening; employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of each investigation.

Today, at the conclusion of a trial, a Sumter County Jury convicted Tomorris L. Johnson of three counts of aggravated child molestation, one count of child molestation, and one count of enticing a child for indecent purposes for incidents that occurred in 2019. Chief Judge R. Rucker Smith sentenced Tomorris Johnson to life in prison. This case was investigated by the Americus Georgia Police Department and was prosecuted by Chief Assistant District Attorney Tami Peavy-Owen with assistance from DA Investigator Stephen Douglas, ADA Levi Lyman-Barner, law student intern Jack Peavy, DA Victim Advocate Tiffany Tatum, and legal secretary Brittney Singley. As always, our office is grateful for the services provided to the victim and her family by the Lighthouse Children's Advocacy Center. We appreciate the citizens of Sumter County for their cooperation as jurors and are relieved to provide closure to this victim and justice for our community.

On June 25, 2025, after two days of trial before a jury, Jack Dewayne Stroud pleaded guilty to Aggravated Child Molestation, Aggravated Sexual Battery, Attempted Statutory R**e, and Child Molestation. He was sentenced by Judge Jimmie Brown to two concurrent life sentences plus 40 concurrent years in prison, followed by 20 consecutive years on probation. The case was investigated by the Lee County, GA Sheriff's Office Special Victim's Unit with support from the Lighthouse Children's Advocacy Center. The case was prosecuted by ADA Trevor Vanzant, with Senior ADA Cania Brown-Gordon as second chair, DA investigator Miles O’Quinn, and DA administrative assistant Julie Moreau. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Lee County and bring justice to the victims and their families in these cases. Thank you to all Lee Countians who were summoned and appeared for jury duty. Our work could not continue without your willingness to serve.
