World Pet Memorial Day is the second Tuesday in June. Created by the American Veterinary Medical Association, it’s a day dedicated to honoring and remembering the beloved pets that have passed away. It affords an opportunity to grieve our furry family members that have passed and find closure.

Animals quickly make a way into our hearts, and because we become so attached, it can be very difficult when they die. If you are mourning the loss of an animal companion it can be helpful to remember your pet by creating a memorial. Something like a garden stepping stone, photo album, planting a tree, or donating to a rescue in your pet’s name. You can also share a picture of your pet on social media at . Whatever you choose to do on World Pet Memorial Day, try to flood yourself with happy thoughts of the many pleasant memories you and your fur baby shared.

It’s Best Friend’s Day!

Dog owners live Best Friends Day every day! Our pups hold a special place in our hearts. They help us cope, are always there when we need them and make tough times bearable. They make us laugh and keep life interesting.

Let’s celebrate our closest and dearest friends and let them know how much we appreciate their company. Share a photo of you and your best friend enjoying time together. If you don’t have a furry best friend yet, may we suggest a few?

Learn more about all of our pups at www.amesanimalshelter.org.

A huge THANK YOU to Bailing Out Benji and their donors for helping sponsor this year’s vaccine and microchip clinic.

380 total animals received a microchip and/or vaccination at the clinic - 182 cats and 198 dogs. Here are a few of the cuties we saw!

286 rabies vaccinations were given, improving the health of not only animals, but protecting humans as well.

A total of 297 distemper vaccinations (FVRCP for cats, DAPP for dogs) were given. The diseases these vaccinations work against can have high mortality rates in cats and dogs. The vaccines are highly effective at preventing illness or drastically reducing the severity of the symptoms.

188 microchips were implanted at the clinic. Our staff and volunteers also located 26 microchips already implanted into animals and provided important information to owners on how to ensure the microchips are registered with their current contact information. This ensures that 214 animals will have a ticket home should they ever become lost.

Thanks also to the veterinarians, vet techs, Shelter staff and around 30 volunteers who donated their time to make this event go smoothly!

Saturday Send-Off!

We’re celebrating little Nash finally heading to his forever home today! Nash was the only puppy out of ten to survive an inexperienced mother. Kathy, one of our Animal Control Officers, took Nash home and provided neonatal care for him around the clock. As he learned to drink from a bottle and later eat more solid food, Nash grew quickly as seen in the photos.

Nash will be hard to part with. We wish him and his new family all the best and thank Kathy and her family for the love, time, and loss of sleep this took. It’s a perfect example of the extra, behind-the-scenes work that the Ames Animal Shelter Staff does.

With our busy lives it’s easy to forget that we are our pets entire world. They depend on us for their well-being, and there’s nothing they love more than spending time with their person. As we recognize how much pets enrich our lives, let’s be sure to give them the care and love they deserve.

Where Are They Wednesday!

Bailey was set to be euthanized when the Ames Animal Shelter stepped up to rescue her. Bailey was soon adopted as an emotional support animal by an ailing gentleman without family. The man was struggling physically as well as emotionally. Thankfully, he and Bailey hit it off and soon became inseparable. Bailey relished her new support role and the undivided attention she received. She even began alerting the man when his blood sugar was low - a skill she came by instinctively. Her new dad, as he called himself, could not be more thrilled with Bailey. She gave him purpose and hope during the past year. With the help of the Shelter, they had saved each other.

Bailey and her dad will soon be moving into a hospice facility where Bailey will continue providing him comfort as his cancer progresses.
