Since 2000 Raising Readers has demonstrated continued progress toward accomplishing its short-term objectives. After participating in programs, parents typically report positive impacts: parents are better able to nurture their children's enjoyment of reading and their children's literacy skills improve. Maintaining quality programs while expanding to reach more families is a current emphasis of R
aising Readers. To this point, programs have addressed literacy experiences of children in their first five years. Promoting reading and learning of 6-8 year-olds is an area for future growth. Raising Readers effectively collaborates with community partners, such as libraries, healthcare providers, human service agencies, schools, service groups, and individuals committed to early literacy. Working together especially helps in providing Raising Readers programs to families living with low incomes and other risk factors.
* GOVERNANCE: Raising Readers is led by an elected Board of Directors and officers that provide direction and oversight. A list of current members of the Board of Directors is attached as Appendix A.
* MANAGEMENT: Board members also take an active role in implementing programs by leading teams and committees that help carry out the work of Raising Readers.
* CONTRACTED SERVICES: Raising Readers contracts for expertise as needed and as funds are available.
* VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are essential to the success of Raising Readers. Individuals and groups who believe in the importance of increasing literacy in young children contribute their time, talents, and resources to help achieve the mission. Raising Readers has a Volunteer Coordinator who provides training and support for volunteers who serve on teams, carry out programs, and provide direct service to parents and their young children.
* FACILITIES: Raising Readers serves families where they are - in the hospital, medical clinics, human service agencies, libraries, food pantries, and at other convenient locations in Story County communities. Mary Greeley Medical Center hosts Raising Readers board meetings, and Ames Public Library provides a small shared office space with phone and mail service. The generosity of partners like these allows Raising Readers to direct more funds toward children's books and parent education. The Raising Readers website makes reliable information and programs available locally, statewide, and worldwide. We believe every child should have the opportunity to reach their potential in language, literacy and learning. We are committed to help our next generation become even better readers, communicators, and learners.
