I visited ISU as a high school senior in 1988, and I was so eager to get to Ames that I enrolled in summer school so I could move sooner. I have never forgotten how excited I felt about Ames when I was eighteen, and nearly thirty years later I still feel the same way. I've listened to what Ames residents want, and as a city council representative, I work hard on these and other issues that effect
us every day:
- Complete Streets: Adoption of a complete streets policy that assesses the infrastructure needs of vehicles, bicycles, mass transit and pedestrians during the planning stages of all new and replacement transportation infrastructure. Modern cities realize that investing in multimodal transportation is a cost effective way to reduce its environmental impact, support and improve citizen health, build community, and improve overall traffic flow for all modes of transportation.
- Cultural Growth: Continue to foster innovative businesses, with the Research Park expansion as a recent example, but also grow our cultural amenities that will attract and retain the individuals and families that will work and live in Ames. Restaurants, retail, art, recreational, green space, music, entertainment, and other cultural opportunities should increase in conjunction with job creation.
- Affordable Housing: As we continue to create jobs we must also ensure there is good quality, affordable housing for the individuals and families of all incomes wanting to live and work in Ames. High housing costs should not be a reason for people to live in other communities and commute to Ames to work, and undermines community growth. I’m eager and ready to work on these goals and bring a new voice of creativity and innovation to the development of the city I call home.
