Ames Public Art Commission Putting the 'Public' in Public Art The Public Art Commission meets the first Wednesday of each month at 12:00 p.m. in City Hall.

Citizens are appointed to the Public Art Commission by the Mayor for the purpose of establishing public art philosophy and developing a public art plan for the City, monitoring the public art budget and recommending funding allocations for public art within City facilities, developing guidelines for selecting artwork, seeking private and governmental funding for public art, and developing educational, promotional projects for public arts programming.

Calling all photographers! We need your submissions!

Entries are now being accepted for the Ames Public Art Commission (PAC)’s Photography Contest. PAC is seeking amateur and professional photographers of all ages who are Ames residents to submit digital photographs for use in PAC’s 2027 Calendar. The theme for the calendar is “Art Up Close.”

A $50 honorarium will be awarded to the photographers of the twelve images selected for use in the calendar. More information about submission requirements is available at www.CityOfAmes.org/PAC.

Today in Ames history: The "Evolution of Corn" mural was hung in the Ames Post Office on April 20, 1938. The mural, part of the New Deal program, was painted by Lowell Houser. It contrasts ancient Mayan and scientific American cultivation practices.

2027 Ames Public Art Commission Calendar

Theme: Art Up Close

Ames residents of all ages are invited to submit photographs of public art within Ames city limits for a chance to be featured in the 2027 calendar.

✨ 12 selected photographers will receive a $50 honorarium

Submit:
• 2 images of each artwork (one full view + one close-up)
• JPEG format, 300 dpi minimum
• Brief artist statement + name, address, phone number, and age
