You are cordially invited to attend the Animal Science Department seminar, “Livestock for Improved Lives and Livelihoods,” presented by distinguished guest speaker Dr. Gbola Adesogan

Friday, April 8, 3:20 pm – 4:10 pm in the Ensminger Room, 1204 Kildee Hall

Dr. Adesogan is the Director of the Food Systems Institute and the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems (https://livestocklab.ifas.ufl.edu/). This lab is part of the U.S. government’s “Feed the Future” global hunger and food security initiative, and it receives funding from USAID, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and CGIAR. As Professor of Ruminant Nutrition in the animal science department at the University of Florida (https://animal.ifas.ufl.edu/people/adegbola-adesogan/), Dr. Adesogan’s research focuses on sustainably increasing animal-source food production and consumption; improving forage production, quality, and preservation; and using feed additives, forages and byproducts to sustainably improve animal production and health.

"Shifting Gender Equality from Afterthought to Guiding Goal of Agricultural Innovation" - All Welcome!

Speaker: Dr. Hale Tufan, Professor, Dept. Global Development; School of Integrative Plant Science, Project Director: GREAT, AWARE, NextGen Cassava, and Innovation Lab for Crop Improvement, Cornell University.

In her work with plant breeders and researchers, Dr. Tufan explores how agriculture can contribute to gender equality and social inclusion. Tufan serves in leadership positions of several projects aimed at food security, crop improvement, seed systems, and gender relations. She is associate director, Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Crop Improvement; PI, Gender Responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Transformation (GREAT); PI, Muhogo Bora: Cassava for All, division lead, NextGen Cassava; gender research lead, Feed the Future Insect-Resistant Eggplant Partnership. 2019 recipient of the Norman Borlaug Field Award.

Our associates in Uganda and excited to welcome our first student group back to Uganda this year! CSLR Associate Director, Dr. Dorothy Masinde and Dr. Richard Schultz will lead the student service-learning group over Spring break in March. The group will focus on establishing woodlots, creating school gardens, working with mothers and children on nutrition and health at Nutrition Education Centers, with livestock farmers on feeding and housing, and with post-harvest handling programs on food preservation and storage at schools.
