β›ˆοΈπŸŒͺ️ May Safety Tips πŸŒͺοΈβ›ˆοΈ

May’s safety tips are brought to you by the Ames Fire Department as part of our monthly safety seriesβ€”helping keep our community safe year-round! πŸš’

With severe weather season ramping up across Iowa, now is a great time to review a few important safety reminders:

βœ… When severe weather hits, know your safest room location ahead of time.
βœ… Build and keep a small emergency kit ready for when severe weather strikes.
βœ… Power outages are bound to happenβ€”always use flashlights and not candles.

A little preparation now can make a big difference when severe weather moves into the area. Stay informed, stay prepared, and stay safe! πŸ‘

πŸš’πŸ”₯On May 9th, 2026, members of the Ames Fire Department conducted live fire training within an acquired structure. πŸš’πŸ”₯

The training allowed firefighters to operate in an unfamiliar environment while observing real fire behavior, heat conditions, and smoke progression throughout the structure. Crews utilized Thermal Imaging Cameras (TICs), practiced hoseline deployments and advancements, completed vent-enter-search drills, and conducted overhaul operations throughout the different evolutions.

Prior to demolition, the structure served as a valuable training resource for multiple agencies and disciplines. All Fire Department Crews along with the recent Recruit Academy utilized the house for search operations, firefighter survival training, ladder skills, hoseline movements, and overhaul operations. Additionally the Ames Police Department also conducted various movement and clearing exercises within the structure.

Training opportunities like these would not be possible without the coordination, preparation, and support of numerous individuals throughout the process. Acquired structure training continues to provide invaluable experience for responders while strengthening the skills needed to safely and effectively serve our community. πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’πŸ πŸ”₯

Today, members of the Ames Fire Department and Ames Police Department had the opportunity to spend time with Ames Middle School 8th grade students who have an interest in careers related to Law Enforcement, Public Safety, Corrections, and government service. πŸš’πŸš“

Students rotated through five hands-on activities designed to provide real-world insight into public safety operations, including:

🩸 Stop the Bleed training
πŸ§— Rescue training scenarios
βš™οΈ Technical rescue and mechanical advantage systems
πŸ–οΈ Fingerprinting and evidence collection techniques
πŸ”₯ Fire extinguisher training

The students were engaged throughout the day, asked great questions, and showed a strong interest in learning more about the different career paths within public safety. These interactive sessions gave students the opportunity to build new skills, learn about teamwork and problem-solving, and gain a better understanding of the work performed by first responders every day.

We appreciate the enthusiasm shown by the students and always enjoy opportunities to help inspire the next generation of public servants! πŸ‘
