🚨 E-Bike Safety & Enforcement Update – Amherst Police Department 🚲

With the weather getting nicer the Amherst Police Department has seen a significant increase in calls and concerns related to e-bike use around town. We want to take a moment to clarify the laws and help keep everyone safe.

⚠️ Know What You or Your Children are Riding
Not all “e-bikes” are treated the same under the law. In New Hampshire, an e-bike must have operable pedals and a motor of 750watts or less.

🔍 E-Bike Classes Explained
• Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph
• Class 2: Throttle-assisted, up to 20 mph
• Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph, must have a speedometer, and riders must be at least 16 years old

👉 If your bike does not have pedals, it is not considered an e-bike and may be treated as a motorized vehicle subject to additional laws and restrictions.

🪖 Helmet Requirements
• Under 16: Helmets required for Class 1 & 2
• Under 18: Helmets required for Class 3

💡 Parents: Before purchasing an e-bike, check its classification label—this information must be displayed on the frame.

Our goal is education first, but safety is our priority. Please ride responsibly and help keep Amherst safe for everyone.
