This week, we recognize and celebrate EMS Week and the amazing individuals who answer the call every day for our community.

Whether it’s a major emergency, a lift assist, a car crash, or simply helping someone through a difficult moment, EMS providers are there 24/7 with compassion, skill, and dedication.

We are proud of the members of our department and all EMS professionals who work long hours, miss holidays with family, and continue to serve others when people need help most.

The Amherst Fire District will be conducting a prescribed burn in the area of Welton Drive in the Village of Nelsonville on Monday April 20th between approximately 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., weather conditions permitting. Residents may see smoke in the area during this time. This burn is planned, controlled, and conducted under strict safety guidelines to reduce wildfire risk and improve land conditions.

Prescribed burning is a service offered by the Amherst Fire District to support safe land management practices within our community. In addition to land management, these operations provide valuable, hands-on training opportunities for our firefighters to build and maintain critical wildland fire suppression skills.

Thanks to a 50/50 cost-share grant through the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Forest Fire Protection (FFP) program, our department was able to purchase new wildland firefighting equipment to better serve our community.

This grant helped us add lightweight wildland PPE (jackets, helmets, and goggles), along with additional tools like Pulaskis, rakes, swats, backpack pumps, and a drip torch. We also expanded our capabilities with Class A foam and improved communications equipment, including radios, pagers, and a cell booster.

This gear is designed specifically for wildland firefighting—lighter and more efficient than structural gear—while still providing the protection our firefighters need to operate safely. With these upgrades, we’re better equipped for fast, effective initial attack and improved protection of homes and property.

We’re grateful for the support that helps keep our firefighters safe and our community protected. 🌲🚒🔥

🚨 High Water Alert – Stay Safe Around the Dam 🚨

With recent conditions, water levels at the dam and downstream are very high and moving fast. This creates a dangerous, life-threatening condition, especially near the edges and riverbanks.

Please remind kids, pets, and adults to stay back and avoid climbing on rocks, barriers, or getting too close to the water. Fast-moving water can be unpredictable and powerful.

Let’s keep everyone safe—stay back, stay aware, and keep a safe distance.

Important message from our local Forest Ranger:

Recent ice storms have led to downed trees and debris throughout Central Wisconsin including Portage County. Landowners are in the process of cleaning up their yards and many will choose to burn the debris as a means of disposal.

The Wisconsin DNR asks that you take extra precautions if you choose to burn as Wisconsin is now entering into the most critical portion of their wildland fire season.

GET A FREE DNR BURN PERMIT, check the conditions BEFORE burning and follow the rules for the day.

Get a DNR burn permit @: https://apps.dnr.wi.gov/burnpermits/

Check WisBurn for the current fire danger and daily burn restrictions: https://apps.dnr.wi.gov/wisburn/ #/FireDanger Check after 9am each morning you wish to burn for current/daily burning regulations.

Make sure your fire is dead out when done.

Consider alternatives to burning including chipping, mulching, composting etc. or wait until after June 1 to burn.

Note that the person responsible for the fire is also responsible for all costs and related damages if the fire escapes their control.

We are currently dealing with hazardous conditions due to the ongoing ice storm.

There are numerous downed trees, limbs, and power lines throughout the area. These hazards may not be visible until it’s too late.

⚠️ Please remember:
- Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary

- Watch for falling branches and trees—conditions are still changing
- Never approach downed power lines—assume they are live
- Emergency services are responding, but high volume of call/conditions may cause delays

Staying home helps keep you safe and allows crews to focus on critical calls.

Please check on neighbors if you can do so safely, and continue to monitor updates.
