🧠 What does it take to become a strong reader? It starts with understanding how the brain learns to read!

Our LETRS Volume 1 and Volume 2 cohorts spent a workday diving deeper into the science of reading and exploring research-based strategies to support student success.

🔎 Volume 1 explored foundational models of reading, including Scarborough’s Reading Rope and the Simple View of Reading, to build an understanding of the skills that come together to help students learn to read.

💡 Volume 2 focused on the depth and breadth of vocabulary instruction, exploring practical strategies teachers can use to build students’ vocabulary and strengthen reading comprehension.

We’re proud of our educators for investing in their professional learning and bringing new knowledge and strategies back to the classroom to help every student become a confident, capable reader! 🍎📖

🏠🚌 A Safe Ride Starts at Home!
National School Bus Safety Week is a great time to have a quick conversation with your child about staying safe around the school bus.

Ask your student:
❓ Where should you wait for the bus?
❓ Why is it important to stay where the driver can see you?
❓ What should you do before crossing in front of the bus?
❓ What do flashing red lights and the stop arm mean?
❓ Why should you never walk behind a school bus?

These conversations don't have to take long but they can make a lasting difference.

Parents + students + bus drivers + motorists = safer school bus rides for everyone.

Let's make safety part of the routine, every day.

Our students and staff are wearing ORANGE to show that we stand together against bullying and believe everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and included!

Kindness starts at home, where children begin learning how to treat others with respect, show empathy, and celebrate differences. Those lessons grow when families, schools, and communities work together to create a culture of kindness and acceptance. 🧡

Today and every day, let's choose kindness, stand up for one another, and remind everyone that we are stronger together!

📚 A Special Visit to Amelon Elementary! 📚
Our students at Amelon Elementary were excited to welcome Senator Creigh Deeds as he spent time reading with three classes!

The students enjoyed listening to fall themed pumpkin stories and having a special guest join them for part of their school day. We are grateful to Senator Deeds for taking the time to visit our school and share his love of reading with our students. ❤️📖

📜 History Comes to Life for ACPS Students!
Students from our 6 elementary schools and 2 middle schools recently visited Sweet Briar College for an exciting opportunity to explore Virginia and our nation’s history!

Students experienced the VA250 Mobile Museum, “Out of Many, One,” an interactive museum on wheels commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. They also visited the Sweet Briar Museum, where they had the opportunity to examine one of the few drafts of the U.S. Constitution and explore a variety of architectural designs.

From exploring the ideas that shaped our nation to discovering the stories behind historic documents and designs, students connected classroom learning with real-world history!
A special thank-you to Sweet Briar College for hosting our students and helping bring history to life!

🚜🍎 Farm to School Month: Growing Healthy Habits in ACPS!

Our schools celebrated Farm to School Month by honoring the local farmers who help keep our students healthy and growing! 🌱 Local partners like Drumheller's Orchard and Saunders Brothers Farm Market generously donated fresh fruits for our students and staff to enjoy. Our students also had local beef, Asian pears, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, and apples. Staff and students showed their appreciation by dressing up like farmers!🌽

🚌 National School Bus Safety Week is here! 🚌
This week, we're celebrating the theme “Safe Rides, Everyday Heroes” and recognizing the people who help get our students to and from school safely every day.

Our school bus drivers are more than drivers - they are an important part of our school community. They greet students each morning, keep a watchful eye on the road, and help make sure our students arrive at school and home safely.

❤️ Thank you to our bus drivers for the important work you do every day!

Throughout this week, we'll be sharing important reminders for students, families, and motorists about keeping our school buses and students safe. Let's work together to make every ride a safe ride!
