American women have served in the United States Marine Corps with honor and distinction since 1918. Oprah May Johnson was the first of these marines to enlist and serve the Corps. In the beginning, women marines served under clerical duties in the states while male marines were needed oversees. In 1943, the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve was established but in June 1948, Congress passed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act which will make female marines a permanent part of the Marine Corps. Female marine will then go on to participate in a variety of different theaters of conflict as well as an ever growing amount of military occupational specialties available to them.

This moment become one of the most infamous money’s not only for the US Marine Corps, but for the Allied effort against the Axis powers in the Pacific during WW2. The battle would be one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history. This iconic photograph, taken by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal, shows the second flag raising on Mount Suribachi by 6 US Marines. Three of the six marines would lose their lives during the battle. Sgt. Mike Strank, Corporal Harlon Block, and Private First Class Franklin Sousley. As Marines, we remember and honor the sacrifices of those that have come before us and the history that has cemented the Marine Corps as America’s elite fighting force.
