UPDATE: Michael Puckett has been captured in Surry County!

Last night, two Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputies were conducting a welfare check when the male subject reportedly opened fire on the responding deputies. Tragically, one deputy lost his life in the line of duty, while the second deputy was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

Sheriff Ayers and the Amherst County Sheriff's Office extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen deputy. We also pray for the wounded deputy and wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Please join us in keeping the fallen deputy, the injured deputy, their families, the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, and all law enforcement personnel involved in your thoughts and prayers.

Puckett fled the scene and an active search is underway. He should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts are urged to immediately call 911.

These enforcement efforts are being conducted because we have received numerous complaints regarding speeding. Residents in these neighborhoods deserve to feel safe while walking along the streets without fear of being struck by a vehicle, and children should be able to safely play in their yards.
