NEWS RELEASE May 1, 2026

The Amite City Police Department has arrested Rickey Smith in relation to a violent incident that took place in 2020 involving an elderly victim.

The investigation began on May 23, 2020, when officers responded to a report of an assault in the parking lot of a local business in Amite. The victim, an elderly woman, was getting into her vehicle when Smith allegedly approached her, opened the car door, and tried to forcibly remove her from the vehicle. During the altercation, Smith made physical contact with the victim. When bystanders in the area began approaching to help, Smith grabbed the victim’s purse and fled the scene.

During the initial investigation, detectives gathered DNA evidence from both the victim’s vehicle and her person. This evidence was sent for analysis.

In April 2026, the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab confirmed that the DNA collected from the scene matched that of Rickey Smith. Following these results, investigators obtained an arrest warrant and Smith was taken into custody on April 22, 2026, and charged with Simple Robbery, Simple Battery, and Attempted Carjacking.

Chief Francois would like to emphasize the department’s commitment to seeking justice, no matter how much time has passed. The Amite City Police Department expresses its gratitude to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for their support in this case.
